Last week on Friday Issued Apple rather unexpectedly new iOS 12.3.1. According to the official notes, the update only brought bug fixes for iPhone and iPad. Apple was not more specific, but now the first tests show that the update also improves the battery life of some iPhones, especially older models.

iOS 12.3.1 is really only a minor update, which, among other things, is proven by its size of just 80 MB (the size varies depending on the device). According to available information, Apple has focused on fixing bugs related to the VoLTE feature as well as removing some unspecified bugs plaguing the native Messages app.

But as the initial tests from the YouTube channel confirm iAppleBytes, the new iOS 12.3.1 also improves the battery life of older iPhones, namely the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 7. Although the differences are in the order of tens of minutes, they are still welcome, especially considering the fact that these are improvements for older models.

For testing purposes, the authors used the well-known Geekbench application, which is capable of measuring battery life in addition to performance. The results understandably diverge from reality, as the phone is under extreme stress during testing, which can hardly be simulated under normal conditions. However, for comparing individual versions of iOS with each other and determining the differences, this is one of the most accurate tests.

Test results:

The results show that the iPhone 5s improved its endurance by 14 minutes, the iPhone 6 by 18 minutes and the iPhone 7 also by 18 minutes. In normal use, however, the increased endurance will be even more noticeable, because - as mentioned above - the battery is used to the maximum during the Geekbench test. As a result, the aforementioned iPhone models will improve significantly after the transition to iOS 12.3.1.
