We have slowly gotten used to the fact that the iPhone's alarm clock does not wake up on certain days of the year. But maybe it happened to you that you woke up late, the iPhone was suspiciously silent, and at the same time the notification was bright on the display, whether we want to turn off or postpone the alarm.

Our editors managed to find out what is really behind it. As it seems, the Clock application is more buggy than we originally thought. Some alarms on phones tend to stop ringing after a while, like half an hour. This happened to me even with Windows Mobile. So I thought I had ignored the alarm in my sleep long enough for it to stop ringing on its own. But the problem is not that the ringtone would stop after the given time. It can turn off easily the same minute the ringing starts.

The problem lies in the fact that the sound turns off by itself at any time during another sound notification. This can be a received mail or a push notification (this does not happen with SMS). Any sound notification will mute the alarm sound. So if you're getting up for work, you get an email at the same time and you're not awake enough to get out of bed to start your morning ritual, you fall asleep and you're uploaded. You can see this serious problem in practice on the following video:

It is alarming that Apple could not discover and fix this bug even in the fourth version of iOS. So before the fix happens, you have one of three options:

  • You set two alarms at an interval of maybe 5 minutes. The backup will wake you up if the first alarm clock fails.
  • Turn on airplane mode. You will not receive any mail or push notification. However, watch out for local notifications that do not require an internet connection.
  • You will wake up with a real alarm clock and not rely on your iPhone.
