The patients of the Jihlava hospital have a pleasant news. From January 21, they can borrow an iPad 2 tablet during hospitalization. The hospital purchased a total of 24 of them from the subsidy title of the Vysočina Region, which was issued for all hospitals in the region, of which there are a total of 5. This subsidy title was intended for the purchase of tablets that are to be lent to patients for leisure activities, especially internet access or video conferencing with family. In this context, it is certainly worth mentioning that the patients of the Jihlava Hospital have access to the Internet for free - only with a limited speed of 4 Mbit/s. When choosing which tablets to buy, the Jihlava Hospital chose iPads from Apple for this purpose.

"Several iPads will be stable in the future in the children's ward and in the long-term patient ward. It is here that we want to use the equipment not only to make patients' free time more pleasant, but also for education or to use appropriate programs to support treatment at the ODN," explains David Zažímal, head of ICT at the Jihlava hospital. Already today, the ward of long-term patients uses several programs on a classic PC. Now the patient will not have to go to the computer, but thanks to tablets, everything can take place right at the patient's bedside, which is an indisputable advantage.

All iPads are equipped with a protective case iPad Smart Case, which means that the iPad is very well protected against a possible fall. In addition, thanks to the magnetic and flexible cover, the iPad can be placed, for example, on a table or table next to each bed. To manage such a large number of iPads, the hospital used the Apple Configurator application, which is free and makes managing these devices much easier.

At the moment, the ICT department of the Jihlava Hospital completely provides the rental of tablets. The patient simply calls a phone number and an authorized worker brings the iPad to him, while signing a contract that protects the hospital against possible loss or damage. It is therefore necessary for the patient to have a valid ID. Renting an iPad costs CZK 50 per day, internet connection is free. If the patient has his own device, internet connection is also free.

Interview with the head of ICT, David Zažímal

Why did you decide on an iPad?

We decided on iPads based on our own good experience - we have been working on ICT and testing various applications on iPads for a year. We would like to gradually incorporate iPads into the work of doctors and nurses in the inpatient department – administering medication, consulting with the patient (RDG image, etc.) or e.g. educational matters related to their illnesses.

Will you be borrowing for the long term on more favorable terms?

The price of 50 CZK is now fixed and we will see in the future whether it is acceptable or not. We are not currently considering another price.

Will interested parties be able to install their applications?

Installing your own apps is prohibited on all iPads. Everything is set via Apple Configurator, so there is no other way.

Are there any apps pre-installed?

Yes, they are. We uploaded about twenty applications that we knew in a year of testing. These are, for example, applications for watching TV (ČT24), journalism (News), games, painting, Skype, etc. In the future, we do not hesitate to upload other applications that patients will welcome or demand - if they are meaningful.

Thanks for the interview.
