In terms of design, they are the same at first glance, but they are slightly different. We are talking about the new iPhone XS and its predecessor, the iPhone X. Although both phones have exactly the same dimensions (143,6 x 70,9 x 7,7 mm), not all cases for last year's model may fit this year's iPhone XS. And that's not even if it's an original case from Apple.

The changes in proportions took place in the area of the camera. Specifically, the lens of the iPhone XS is slightly larger than that of the iPhone X. The changes are almost imperceptible to the naked eye, but the different dimensions become apparent after putting on the case originally designed for last year's model. According to editors of foreign media who had the honor to test the novelty first, the camera lens is up to a millimeter higher and wider. And even such a small change can in some cases cause the packaging from last year to not be 100% compatible with the new product.

You probably won't run into a problem with most packaging. However, minor problems start already with the original leather cover from the Apple workshop, where the left side of the lens does not fit into the cut-out for the camera quite correctly. A Japanese blog drew attention to the ailment Mac Otakara and Marques Brownlee highlighted it similarly (just the opposite) in his yesterday review (time 1:50). So although the classic cases will fit in the overwhelming majority, there could be a problem with extremely thin covers. Therefore, if you are going to switch from iPhone X to iPhone XS, you need to take into account possible incompatibility.
