In 2017, we saw the revolutionary iPhone X, which came in a brand new body, offered an edge-to-edge display and surprised with the brand new Face ID technology. This gadget replaced the iconic Touch ID fingerprint reader and, according to Apple, significantly strengthened not only the security itself, but also the comfort of users. Face ID works on the basis of a 3D scan of the face, according to which it can determine whether the owner is really holding the phone or not. In addition, thanks to machine learning, it constantly improves and learns how the user looks or changes over time.

On the other hand, Face ID is also the cause of sharp criticism. The technology as such is dependent on the so-called TrueDepth camera, which is hidden in the upper cutout in the display (the so-called notch). And he is the imaginary pebble in the shoe of some fans. Practically since the arrival of the iPhone X, therefore, there have been various speculations about the soon deployment of Face ID under the display, thanks to which we would be able to get rid of the not-so-good-looking cut-out. The problem, however, is that although speculation mentions it year after year change coming soon, until now we have received practically nothing.

When will Face ID under the display come?

The first minor change came with the iPhone 13 (2021) series, which boasted a slightly smaller cutout. The next step was brought by the iPhone 14 Pro (Max), which instead of the traditional notch opted for the so-called Dynamic Island, which changes dynamically according to various operations. Apple turned an unaesthetic element into an advantage. Although we have seen some progress in this direction, we still cannot talk about completely getting rid of the mentioned cut-out. But even so, the aforementioned speculations continue. This week, news about the iPhone 16 flew through the Apple community, which should apparently offer Face ID under the display.

The question therefore arises. Are we really going to see this long-awaited change, or is it just another speculation that will ultimately come to nothing? Of course, it is necessary to mention that it is difficult to estimate anything this far in advance. Apple does not publish any detailed information about the upcoming devices in advance. Considering how long the deployment of Face ID under the iPhone display has been talked about, we should approach these reports with more caution. In a way, this is an unfinished story that has accompanied Apple users since the days of the iPhone X and XS.

iPhone 13 Face ID concept

At the same time, it is still necessary to mention one important fact. Deploying Face ID under the phone display is an extremely fundamental and technologically demanding change. If we were to see such an iPhone, it can clearly be said that it would be one of its most important innovations, on which Apple would base its promotion itself. Due to the importance and difficulty, it can therefore be expected that the giant will keep such information as confidential as possible. According to this theory, it is therefore rather more likely that we will hear about the real deployment of Face ID under the display only during the actual presentation of the new phone, at most a few hours or days in advance. What do you think about the constant speculation about the arrival of this change? Do you think it is realistic that the aforementioned iPhone 16 will offer something like this?
