Unlike virtual reality, augmented reality allows people to do things that were previously seen as science fiction or simply couldn't be done without the use of a physical product or assistance. Thanks to AR, doctors can prepare for operations, designers can see and analyze their creations, and ordinary users can use it to take pictures with Pokémon.

The new Phiar navigation for iPhone wants to offer practical use of ARKit for most of us. The app from the Palo Alto startup uses artificial intelligence, GPS and AR to get you where you're going in a modern way. On the phone screen you can see the current time, the expected time of arrival, a mini-map and on the way it generates a line, which may be familiar especially to players of racing games. Since it is an AR program, the phone's rear camera is also used, and the application can also serve as a recorder in the event of an accident.

Artificial intelligence is used to know how to navigate to specific traffic lanes, warn of an upcoming traffic light change or display places worthy of your attention. In addition, it scans the environment from the camera and, based on factors such as visibility or weather, determines what elements should be shown on the screen. The application will also warn the user of an imminent collision with a person, car or other object. The icing on the cake is that the AI calculations run locally and the application does not connect to the cloud. Machine learning is then an important factor.

The technology is currently available in closed beta for the iPhone, and testing on Android should also begin later this year. In the future, in addition to the open beta and full release, the developers also want to expand the application to support voice control. The company also indicated that it has received interest from automakers that could use its technology directly in their cars.

If you would like to take part in testing the application, you can sign up for the test program at forms of Phiar. The requirement is that you have an iPhone 7 or later.
