Until now, a mobile internet connection has mostly been expected to be slower than the average Wi-Fi hotspot. However, as we have observed in recent years in our country, the situation can also be the opposite. Mobile data can often be faster than a regular hotspot. That this assumption is wrong in some countries was also confirmed by a new survey by Open Signal, which examined mobile data speeds in 80 countries around the world.

Faster mobile connection than Wi-Fi

Open Signal, a wireless mapping company, came from by survey, which included a total of 80 countries in the world. The study looked at the speed differences between a mobile connection and the average Wi-Fi hotspot in each country. It found that in 33 of the countries surveyed, you're likely to surf faster using mobile data than connecting to random Wi-Fi. And few will be surprised that the Czech Republic is among these countries.

The most important findings of the study can be summarized in the two graphs shown above this paragraph. The left graph shows in orange the data download speed in the case of a mobile connection, in blue the download speed in the case of average Wi-Fi in the given country. The right graph ranks the difference in speed, and it can be seen that the Czech Republic is ranked at the top alongside Australia, Qatar or Greece.

They distort the data

It is a relatively well-known fact that the Czech Republic is an elite among European countries both in terms of quality signal coverage and mobile connection speed. And it can be easily verified by visiting one of the neighboring states. In the case of Germany, there are problems with signal or fast connection mainly in areas outside big cities, the same applies in Poland and, for example, France, the situation is much worse.

From the information given, it may seem that great powers such as the USA, Japan, South Korea or Singapore are lagging behind. However, this survey is misleading because it mainly focuses on the difference between connection speeds and gives priority to countries where mobile connections lead. In the case of the Czech Republic, speeds of 18,6 Mbps for Wi-Fi and 28,8 Mbps for mobile connections are given. For example, the graph does not show countries that, like South Korea, can boast of a tremendous mobile connection speed of 45 Mbps and an even faster Wi-Fi with 56,3 Mbps.

The study predicts that with the future rollout of 5G networks, it is likely that mobile connections will outpace Wi-Fi in other countries as well. For the Czechs, the study shows that there is really nothing to complain about when it comes to mobile internet.
