When Apple introduced the new Apple Watch Series 4 in September, the biggest ovation deservedly went to the ECG function. However, the enthusiasm soon waned slightly, as soon as the company announced that the novelty would initially only be available in the United States, until the end of the year. However, it seems that the wait is slowly over, as the new Apple Watch will learn to measure EKG with the arrival of watchOS 5.1.2, which is currently already in the testing phase.

A foreign server came today with information about the availability of the function MacRumors, according to which ECG support in watchOS 5.2.1 is promised in an official document for Apple Store employees. Specifically, with the arrival of the new update, a new native application will arrive on the Apple Watch Series 4, which will show the user whether his heart rhythm shows signs of arrhythmia. The Apple Watch will thus be able to determine atrial fibrillation or more serious forms of irregular heart rhythm.

To take an ECG, the user will need to place their finger on the crown while wearing the watch on their wrist. The whole process then takes 30 seconds, during which an electrocardiogram is displayed on the display, and the software then determines from the measurement results whether the heart shows signs of arrhythmia or not.

However, to get the relevant ECG application, watchOS 5.2.1 will not be enough, but the user must own at least an iPhone 5s with iOS 12.1.1, which is also currently in the testing phase. Both systems should therefore reach the public on the same day. Apple will probably release the sharp versions very soon, because watchOS 5.2.1 has been available to developers since November 7, and iOS 12.1.1 even since October 31.

The feature will also be limited by region, specifically for now only to users in the United States, where Apple has obtained the necessary approval from the Food and Drug Administration. However, ECG measurements are supported by all Apple Watch Series 4 models sold worldwide. If, for example, a user from the Czech Republic changes the region in the phone and watch settings to the United States, he will be able to easily test the function. U earlier server 9to5mac discovered that the ECG application will really only be bound to the mentioned setting.

A little something even for owners of older models

But the new watchOS 5.1.2 will not only bring news to the latest Apple Watch. Owners of older models will be able to enjoy an improvement that will make their watch able to warn them of an irregular heart rhythm. This feature will be available on Series 1 and all newer models.
