Future Olympic champions will most likely wear medals made from older iPhones around their necks. At least that's according to the Tokyo Organizing Committee, which will host the upcoming Summer Olympics next year. In addition to iPhones, gold, silver and bronze medals will also be made from other smartphones and other consumer electronics.

The operator NTT Docomo has several collection stations located in department stores, public buildings, or post offices throughout Japan and has managed to collect more than 47 tons of electronics to date. Specifically, 000 kilograms of gold, three tons of bronze and over four tons of silver were obtained. The rare-waste collection program ends on March 33, with medal production expected to begin this summer.

With a thought. making Olympic medals from recycled materials has long been toyed with by one of the non-governmental organizations whose priority was to set up organized collection for e-waste across Japan. At the same time, however, she was aware of the amount of mineral resources found in old facilities, which gave the idea the green light. The idea is also supported by Apple itself, which has placed great emphasis on recycling in recent years.
