Journal study Heart rhythm journal already indicated earlier this year that MagSafe technology, which is included in the entire iPhone 12 range, can disable pacemakers in certain situations. Apple already addressed these concerns in document of your support, with the US Food and Drug Administration finally issuing its own opinion on the matter.

Press Release issued by the FDA mentions that it conducted its own testing to confirm or refute the findings of earlier studies on the effect of MagSafe on implanted medical devices. It states that "the risk to patients is small" and that the agency is not currently aware of any adverse effects associated with the technology. Nevertheless, the report also describes the prevention of possible complications by recommending certain precautions to pacemaker owners.

  • Keep consumer electronics, such as some mobile phones and smart watches, at least 15 cm away from implanted medical devices.
  • Do not carry or use consumer electronics in your pocket near implanted medical devices
  • Patients with implanted medical devices should always consult their physicians regarding the use of consumer electronics to understand the potential risk they may be exposed to.

There may be a certain future in magnets. Indeed, Jeff Shuren, MD, JD, FDA director of devices and radiological health, mentions in the report that an increasing number of consumer electronics are expected to work with strong magnets. Fortunately, Apple takes human health seriously, as evidenced by his document, in which he explains that MagSafe technology "may interfere with medical devices, but the iPhone 12 poses no greater risk of magnetic interference to medical devices than previous phone models."

Although MagSafe technology is already known from MacBooks, in iPhone 12 Apple has completely redesigned it for use in wireless charging of these and certainly future phones of the brand. This way, the compatible device fits better on the back of the phone, resulting in more accurate charging.

Other risks of modern technologies

We can probably agree that just as modern technologies help us to make life easier, they can also make it considerably more unpleasant. Previously, the call was mainly for the reduction of SAR, i.e. the specific absorbed power absorbed by the human body. It is emitted not only by mobile phones, but also, for example, by ultrasound. However, its negative effects are not known to this day.

Other diseases are also associated with the use of smartphones. Their excessive use changes the structure of the human body, when we crouch over small displays, thereby creating problems with the cervical spine. Intense gaming can also lead to carpal tunnel inflammation. It is therefore always advisable to intersperse the use of technology with some kind of exercise.
