The heart of Apple computers is their macOS operating system. Compared to its competitor Windows, which is, among other things, the most used operating system in the world, it is highlighted primarily for its simplicity and graphic design. Of course, each of them has its bright and dark sides. While Windows is the absolute number one in PC gaming, macOS is more focused on work and for slightly different reasons. However, in terms of basic software equipment, the apple representative slowly has no competition.

Of course, the operating system alone is not enough. To work with a computer, we logically need a number of programs for various tasks, in which macOS clearly leads the way. Among the most important applications we can include, for example, a browser, an office package, an e-mail client and others.

There is nothing missing in the software equipment of Macs

As we have already slightly hinted above, there are quite a few available within the macOS operating system native and well-optimized applications, thanks to which we can do without any alternative. But the best part is that they are available completely free and for everyone. Since Apple is behind them, we can indirectly determine that their price is already included in the total amount for the given device (MacBook Air, iMac, etc.). Apple users have, for example, the iWork office package at their disposal, which can handle common tasks with ease.

This office suite can be divided into three individual applications - Pages, Numbers and Keynote - which compete with the most popular programs from the Microsoft Office suite such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Of course, the Cupertino solution unfortunately does not reach the quality of Microsoft, but on the other hand, it offers everything that we could need as ordinary users. They are able to meet our needs without a single problem and easily export the resulting files to the formats that the aforementioned Office works with. However, the main difference is in the price. While the competition charges a lot of money for a purchase or subscription, iWork is available for free from the App Store. The same is true in other areas. Apple continues to offer, for example, iMovie, a fairly reliable and, above all, simple video editor, which can be used to edit and export videos very quickly. Similarly, GarageBand works with audio, recording and more.

Although alternative and free solutions can be found on Windows, it is still not equal to the level of Apple, which offers all these applications not only for Mac, but for the entire ecosystem. They are therefore also available on iPhones and iPads, which greatly facilitates the overall work and automatically solves the synchronization of individual files via iCloud.

It was not so famous in the past

So today, macOS can appear flawless in terms of software features. Whether a new user needs to send a simple email, write a document, or edit a vacation video and intersperse it with his own music, he always has a native and well-optimized app at his disposal. But again, we have to emphasize that these programs are available completely free of charge. But this was not always the case, as years ago the Cupertino giant charged a few hundred crowns for these applications. For example, we can take the entire iWork office package. It was first sold as a whole for $79, later for $19,99 per app for macOS, and $9,99 per app for iOS.

The change then came only in 2013, i.e. eight years after the introduction of the iWork package. At the time, Apple announced that all OS X and iOS devices purchased after October 2013 were eligible for free copies of these programs. The package is then fully free (even for older models) only from April 2017.
