Today is exactly ten years since Steve Jobs introduced the then revolutionary device. On January 15, 2008, during the keynote, he introduced the thinnest laptop in the world at the time. In addition to its size, it took away many other firsts and basically wrote itself onto the map of Apple products in a very distinctive font, which is still on it today - although its current state is rather unfortunate and the last model has been looking for its quality successor for several years.

Together with the MacBook Air, Steve Jobs introduced many other innovations, such as the AirPort Time Capsule and advanced sharing options between Macs, iPhones and Apple TV. You can view the entire keynote from that time below, the section with the introduction of the MacBook Air starts at 48:55.

The "world's thinnest laptop" was the first Apple computer not to have an integrated CD/DVD drive. From today's point of view, this is nothing unusual, ten years ago it was a rather shocking reduction in compatibility. Likewise, the various ports (which Apple considered archaic at the time, but not quite archaic yet) disappeared. It was also the first device to offer multitouch trackpad support and included an optional solid state drive. The weight was under three pounds (1,36kg) and the display contained no trace of mercury. However, all these innovations were not free.

The basic model, which included a dual-core (1,6GHz) Intel Core2Duo processor, 2GB of RAM and an 80GB HDD, cost $1800. So roughly the "same" amount (inflation notwithstanding) as a very solidly equipped 13″ MacBook Pro with Touch Bar costs today. The fully "maxed out" specification then cost less than $3, which at the time was $100 more than the basic Mac Pro with a faster processor and memory cost. Now, ten years after its launch, the MacBook Air is still available. It received the last major update from the end of 300, and since then Apple has not touched it - if we do not take into account the removal of the 2015" model last year and the increase in the basic capacity of the operating memory from 11 to 4 GB. This year, for its tenth anniversary, Air deserves a major makeover. It's been almost two years now.
