Maybe you too have come across a strange error message while using your Mac, telling you that your IP address is being used by another device. This error message is not exactly one of the most common, but it may happen that you also see it under certain circumstances. What to do in such cases?

If the system thinks your IP address is being used by another device, it can prevent your Mac from accessing parts of your local network, as well as connecting to the Internet. IP address conflict is an unusual and often unexpected complication, but in the vast majority of cases it can be resolved relatively easily and quickly with the help of a few easy steps that even a less experienced user can easily handle. We will look at them together.

The IP address is being used by another device - solution to the problem

It may be that in your particular case, resolving IP address conflicts on a Mac is a matter of simple, quick steps. One of them is to terminate the application that is currently using the given Internet connection. In the upper left corner of your Mac screen, click Apple menu -> Force Quit. Select the app you want to shut down from the list, click Force Quit and confirm. Another option is to put your Mac to sleep for a few minutes—perhaps ten—and then wake it up again. You do this by clicking the Apple menu -> Sleep in the upper left corner of your Mac screen. You can also try restarting your Mac by clicking Apple menu -> Restart. If you have access to System Preferences on your Mac, click System Preferences -> Network in the upper left corner of your computer screen. In the panel on the left side of the window, select Network, and then click Advanced in the lower right. At the top of the window, select the TCP/IP tab, then click Renew DHCP Lease.

If the above steps did not resolve the IP address conflict, you can try disconnecting your Mac from the Wi-Fi network or turning off your router for 10 minutes.
