The move to Apple Silicon has paid off big for Apple. In this way, he was able to solve the earlier problems of apple computers and overall moved them to a completely new level. With the arrival of their own chips, Macs have significantly improved in terms of performance and energy consumption, which makes them significantly more economical and, in the case of laptops, offer longer battery life. The arrival of new Apple Silicon chips was already announced by Apple in June 2020, when it also mentioned that the transition would be completed within two years.

As the Cupertino giant promised, it also fulfilled. Since then, we have seen quite a few Macs equipped with new Apple Silicon chips. The new generation was opened by the M1 chipset, followed by the M1 Pro and M1 Max professional models, while the entire first series was closed by the M1 Ultra chip. Practically the entire range of Apple computers thus switched to newer chips - that is, with the exception of a single device. We are, of course, talking about the traditional Mac Pro. But it is already rumored that this model will receive an unimaginably powerful M2 Extreme chip.

Apple is preparing the M2 Extreme chip

The Mac Pro is currently the only Apple computer that still relies on Intel processors. But in the final, there is nothing to be surprised about. This is a professional device with extreme performance, which Apple itself cannot yet cover. At first, however, it was expected that this Mac would see the transition to Apple Silicon within the first generation. But when Apple revealed the Mac Studio with the M1 Ultra chip, it mentioned that it was the last chip in the M1 series. On the other hand, he lured us into the near future. According to him, the arrival of even more powerful computers awaits us.

It is in this regard that the introduction of the Mac Pro with the M2 Extreme chip, which could be similar to the M1 Ultra chip, is expected. In this case, Apple developed a special technology thanks to which it was able to connect two M1 Max chips together and thus double their performance. Even before the introduction of this piece, however, experts found out that the M1 Max chips are actually specially designed for this purpose and are therefore able to connect up to four chipsets together. And this is where the M2 Extreme could apply for a say. Based on available speculation, Apple should specifically link four M2 Max chips. In that case, a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon could offer a chipset that would offer 48 CPU cores and 96/128 GPU cores.

Is it enough to double the cores?

The question is also whether this approach from Apple actually makes sense. In the case of the first generation of M1 chips, we saw that the giant relied on increasing the cores themselves, but their basis was more or less the same. Because of this, the performance of computers does not increase for tasks that rely on only one core, but only for those that use more of them. But it is necessary to realize that in this case we are already talking about the next generation, which is supposed to strengthen not only the number of cores, but above all their individual efficiency and performance. In this direction, we can rely on the available data on the M2 chip, which received a minor improvement compared to the previous generation. While the M1 chip scored 1712 points in the single-core benchmark test, the M2 chip scored 1932 points.
