The dictionary belongs to the most basic equipment of your computer. The problem is that if we want a dictionary on Mac that translates from SK/CZ EN there is not much to choose from. Well, there is one really well made - Lingea Lexicon 5.
Lingea has been developing dictionaries for a long time and its Lexicon dictionary is mainly known from the Windows platform. It contains a rich vocabulary with high-quality translations, automatic search for synonyms and much more.
The first thing you'll be greeted with after launching the app Tip of the day, where you will learn different information and translations of words with their correct usage, or different types of functions within the dictionary. There is also an option not to display this window when starting the application.
The application environment is tuned to a pleasant blue-white color. The dictionary contains several modules:
Dictionaries
suplements
Learning
In the following lines, we will introduce each of them in more detail.
Dictionaries
In the Dictionaries menu, you will see all your installed Lingea Lexicon dictionaries. In the left menu you can notice 6 categories.
The great – dictionary of word translations
Use of words – the use of words in sentences
Skratky – the most common abbreviations of the given word
Grammar – the grammar of the given language
wordnet – explanatory dictionary ENEN
Custom – here you can view your own dictionaries that you have created
As you enter individual letters into the search engine, you will automatically be offered the word that best matches your search term. After entering a specific word, you will see its translation, pronunciation, as well as various word combinations and examples at the bottom of the screen. After clicking on the key icon, you will find out, for example, whether the given word is countable or not. Click on the speaker icon to hear the pronunciation. Here I see a minor disadvantage in that the application does not support multiple accents. In the settings, you can set the option of automatic pronunciation as soon as you enter the given word.
They are displayed in the lower left part Meanings, Shapes a Collocation of words, which are nicely sorted into categories and after clicking on them you will automatically move to their direct translation.
suplements
This category has 4 subcategories namely:
Grammar overview
User dictionary
Custom themes
Add to topic
Grammar overview it is really well made and you can find all the basic information from English alphabet through Nouns, Pronouns, Verbal, Word order until Irregular verbs and much more. Most of these categories also contain subcategories, so the selection is really comprehensive.
User dictionary is used to enter your specific expressions that are not in the basic dictionary. Terms added in this way will also be available through the main search engine. You can add formatting or pronunciation to them.
Custom themes – in this menu you can create different subject areas from which you can then be tested (see the next paragraph). Your history of search terms is also displayed here, and it is very easy to create your own theme from these terms. However, what freezes is that the application only remembers expressions until you turn it off (Cmd+Q, or via the top bar. "X" in the upper right does not turn off the application, but minimizes it).
Learning
In the left part, several circuits are pre-set, in which you will find classified words, from which you can be tested, or simply just practice them. This is done by the panel at the bottom of the screen, where you have a few simple options to choose from. If you choose the option Learning, the system will automatically start displaying all the words from the given category one after the other in the set time interval. You can adjust the speed with the slider, but only before learning.
Trials it works on a similar principle, where you will gradually see words without their translation and your task is to write the translation in the box at the bottom of the screen. If you spelled the word correctly, the second word will automatically appear. If not, the translation will be displayed for a few seconds before the next word is displayed. At the end of the test, the overall evaluation of the test is displayed.
It's also worth mentioning that you can search for words you don't understand in the entire application by simply double-clicking on them. Lingea Lexicon supports many smaller functions that did not fit into this review, so I definitely recommend you to read the manual, which is of course localized into Czech and Slovak. Of course, Lingea offers a number of other dictionaries to choose from, but we had the opportunity to test "The big version" with a translation from SK/CZ EN.
For an affordable price, you can equip your Mac with a really high-quality dictionary, which is certainly currently at the top among SK/CZ dictionaries.
Soon we will bring you a comparison of dictionaries for the iPhone, where we will also test the application from the company Lingea - Look forward to it!
Lingea
Lingea Lexikon 2000 for Windows was my favorite dictionary, I couldn't let it go. Excellent in terms of functionality and content. That's why I also bought its version for Mac. But I was very disappointed. The application is written in Java, so it starts up terribly slowly. I was unable to install without the help of a support technician (willing and knowledgeable) and a patch downloaded from the manufacturer, and it is very impractical that after searching for one word it is not possible to immediately type another until I click the input window with the mouse. Can you please tell me how the new version behaves? At first glance, it doesn't look like a native Mac app.
The dictionary is still just as stupid, when copying it always gives me the letter "v" at the end of the word as if I were to insert it, I always have to delete it and then press enter to find the command. Sometimes it happens when you switch between the text and the dictionary that when you insert the text through apple copy, only the letter "v" is inserted instead of the word. The dictionary is by no means a native application, but runs on the X11 environment. It's just a day from a technical point of view, but also from a content point of view. Compared to the previous version, the vocabulary has been cut down quite a bit, and we'll admit it!! If you want to be pissed off like me, buy a dictionary!
Lingea is really super software for translating.
Unfortunately, when I look at the user interface, it gives me a hard time.
Are they serious?
Who needs Lingea on the iPhone - when you look in the App-store, you will be staring at some 50 Euros. (they have something there for 5 Euro, but that's so small for a laugh). I don't know English, but I don't know other languages. It is better to combine EN x some language - in terms of scope (approx. 2-3x larger) + other things (complete timing of verbs, phrases, control) and finally, the price is somewhere else. approx. 6 Euro - 24 Euro.
I posted a comment in the forum here:

Thanks for the helpful forum post
Lingea Lexicon 5 for Mac is, in a word, a blast. The graphical interface is disgusting in itself, the application runs on the X11 environment, the new version against Lexicon 2002 is trimmed in vocabulary! The password is there for half a penny. The application itself behaves strangely, when copying text into the dictionary, it always puts it at the end of the word V, I don't know why. I had a Lexicon 2002 for many years, it failed completely, it was slower, but it did the job. In 8 years, Lingea created this mess in the form of Lexicon 5. Unfortunately, there is no way back, after the Java update, Lexicon 2002 stopped working, until then I regret buying this new version. I don't use this dictionary on my Mac, I prefer to use the translation dictionary in the Mac OS system or online dictionaries. In conclusion, I say that Lexicon 5 should not be taken even for free!!
Lingea already has a new version that does not need X11. I installed it last week. It was necessary to download new images with the latest version of the binaries, and since I have the platinum version, it was not without problems from the beginning, but with the help (of a very willing support technician) we put it together.
Everything mentioned here is solved in this version, i.e. it no longer adds "v" when inserting, just start typing and the text will start to appear without clicking. With the older version, which used X11, there were occasional problems with Expose and Spaces - that has also been resolved.
I am now completely satisfied with Lingea :-)
I have a Lexicon 5 large English-Czech dictionary, I would like to know where the update can be downloaded, I couldn't find anything on the lingei website. Can you give me a link or advice on how to do this? Thank you.
Just log in to the "activation center" and there is an item "to download". An ISO image of the large dictionary is available there.
Thanks for the reply, I heard that the updates will be available only after registration. I downloaded the update, but the problem occurred during installation, the user must be logged in as admin, I don't understand why the installer didn't force admin rights and I couldn't log in as usual. The second thing is that the pronunciation didn't work for me, the update installed another dictionary next to the old one. I got nervous and deleted everything and installed everything clean. In the final it was found that I had done too many activations and I had to contact lingea. So what a waste of time again, I'm dialed again. Not only was I not informed about this important update by lingea, but I can't find out what or how anywhere. The lingei pages are confusing and there is no login link anywhere, one has to search in some submenus. That's just not how I imagine software, for that money I should get a product native to my OS and with the possibility of automatic updates, like there is no freeware out there. It's a shame, by the way I contacted lingea with problems x weeks ago, I never got a reply, I'm doing a dead bug. Zaver is not to take lingea. I will not buy any of their products again, they are amateurs for a lot of money!
There is no doubt that the updates could be downloaded by themselves. And that activation is pretty annoying, that's for sure. To be honest, it will definitely crack, so the protection will be minimal and it's annoying us since we bought Linge. In short, it still has flies :-) Btw, it looks like Windows already has automatic updates.
It's strange with the installation - it just asked me for a password, as usual, and that was it.
A note about the activation and update occurred to me: Lingea is still "golden" compared to Matlab. Even the guy on the help desk somewhere in India couldn't solve the activation problems :-( And the updates? They go around in the style: "Do you mind the bugs in our software? Buy a new version!" I hope Lingea doesn't end up with something similar :-)

what kind of application is it that you need an expert to install it, isn't it enough to download a paid application and install it normally? or is it some kind of cracked? and how is it with such applications, can non-original and cracked versions be installed there (I mean mac) software or only original purchase or free or trail. I don't have a mac but I'm getting ready for it, so I'd like some info...thanks
