The social network TikTok continues to move the world. This time it will be discussed in connection with the death of one of its child users and subsequent restrictions in Italy. Another piece of news from our roundup concerns Facebook's iOS app, whose users experienced an unexpected logout over the weekend. Finally, we will talk about Microsoft and the change in its approach to increasing the price of the Xbox Live service.

TikTok and the blocking of users in Italy

A number of different affairs have probably been associated with the social network TikTok all the time, whether due to ambiguities in access to user privacy, or due to content that is often controversial. Last week saw the death of a 10-year-old girl who was trying out TikTok's "Blackout Game" - in which young TikTok users strangled themselves in various ways to experience either a change in consciousness or a complete blackout. The aforementioned girl was found unconscious in the bathroom by her parents, later died in a hospital in Palermo, Italy. In response to the incident, Italy's data protection authority blocked access to TikTok in the country to users who failed to prove their age. The minimum age to use TikTok is thirteen. TikTok has recently been ordered in Italy to block access to users whose age cannot be verified. The regulation is valid only on the territory of Italy. "Social networks must not become a jungle in which everything is allowed," said in this context Licia Ronzulli, chairperson of the Italian Parliamentary Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth.

Facebook and bulk user opt-out

You may have been automatically logged out of your Facebook account in the relevant mobile application at the end of last week. You were certainly not alone – many users around the world experienced this error. Facebook said the mass error was caused by "configuration changes". The bug only affected Facebook's iOS app, and it happened just before last weekend. The first reports of the bug began to spread on Friday evening, when users began reporting on Twitter that they were unable to log into their iOS Facebook app. Some users who had two-factor authentication enabled even had trouble regaining access to their account, and some were even asked for proof of identity by Facebook. The verification SMS came either after a very long time or did not come at all. "We are aware that some users are currently having trouble signing in to Facebook. We believe this is a bug caused by a configuration change and are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible." a Facebook spokesperson said. The bug should have been fixed over the weekend.

Microsoft and Xbox Live Gold pricing changes

Microsoft announced last Friday that it plans to raise the price of an annual subscription to its Xbox Live gaming service to $120 for most users. This news, for understandable reasons, met with a very negative response. But Microsoft has now reconsidered its move and announced that the amount of the annual subscription to the Xbox Live service will remain unchanged. In addition, Microsoft has also decided that playing free games will no longer be conditional on a subscription. Popular titles such as Fortnite can be played on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch without an online subscription, but Xbox will still require a subscription. However, in this context, Microsoft states that it is working on a change in this direction as well in the coming months.
