At WWDC 2022, Apple introduced its second-generation Apple Silicon chip, called the M2, to the world. Of course, he also presented us with its advantages and performance increases. We also later learned that the MacBook Air and Pro will be the first to include it. But with which Intel processor was Apple actually comparing its new product?

According to Apple, the M2 chip has an octa-core CPU consisting of 4 performance cores and 4 economy cores, which is said to be 18% faster than the one in the M1 chip. As for the GPU, it has up to 35 cores and Apple claims it is 40% more powerful than the previous generation. The Neural Engine even increased in speed by 1% compared to its predecessor in the form of the M2 chip. At the same time, the M24 offers up to 100 GB of RAM and a throughput of 20 GB/s. The number of transistors has grown to XNUMX billion.

Apple compared the performance of the M2 chip to "the latest XNUMX-core notebook processor," which basically means Intel Core i7-1255U, which is included, for example, in the Samsung Galaxy Book2 360. Both sets were also said to be equipped with 16 GB of RAM. According to him, M2 is 1,9 times faster than the aforementioned Intel processor. The GPU of the M2 chip is then 2,3x faster than the Iris Xe Graphics G7 96 EUs in the Core i7-1255U and can match its peak performance while consuming only a fifth of the energy.

Historically, we were used to Apple literally comparing apples and pears, because it was no problem for him to reach for a processor that was several years old, just to make the numbers look nice. Even now, of course, he did not say exactly which competitor's processor it is, but according to its characteristics, everything points to the Intel Core i7-1255U.

Moreover, the latter is no dig, as the company introduced it earlier this year. The South Korean manufacturer then showed the world the Samsung Galaxy Book2 360 in February this year. It is true that the Intel Core i7-1255U is a ten-core, but it only has two performance cores and 8 effective cores. The maximum memory size, on the other hand, can be up to 64 GB, while the M2 supports "only" 24 GB.
