If you regularly follow the events in the apple world, ideally through our magazine, then you certainly did not miss the presentation of the new iPhone 12 last week. Apple specifically presented four models with the designation 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max. While pre-orders for the iPhone 12 mini and 12 Pro Max have not even started yet, the first pieces of the 12 and 12 Pro will arrive to users this Friday. If you're one of those people who want to buy a new Apple phone, but can't decide whether to go for the latest 12 or the older, but still great XR, then you've come to the right place. Apple also offers SE (2020), 11 and XR alongside the new "twelves", and in this article we will look at the comparison of the iPhone 12 and XR. Let's get straight to the point.

Processor, memory, technology

As is usual with our comparisons, we look into the guts of the compared devices right from the start - and this comparison will be no different. If you're looking for an iPhone 12, you should know that this Apple phone offers the A14 Bionic processor, which is currently the most powerful and modern processor from the Californian giant. The 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max flagships are also equipped with it, and in addition to phones, you can also find it in the 4th generation iPad Air. The A14 Bionic offers a total of six computing cores, sixteen Neural Engine cores, and the GPU has four cores. The maximum frequency of this processor is 3.1 GHz. As for the iPhone XR, it is equipped with a two-year-old A12 Bionic processor, which has six computing cores, eight Neural Engine cores, and the GPU has four cores. The maximum frequency of this processor is 2.49 GHz. In addition to the processor, it is also important to mention which RAM memories the compared devices are equipped with. As for the iPhone 12, it has a total of 4 GB of RAM, the iPhone XR is a bit worse off with 3 GB of RAM - but it's still not a significant difference.

Both mentioned models have Face ID biometric protection, which works on the basis of advanced face scanning using the TrueDepth front camera. It should be noted that Face ID is one of the only biometric protections of its kind – many competing security systems based on face scanning can be easily fooled by, for example, using a photo, which is not a threat with Face ID mainly because of 3D scanning and not just 2D. According to available information, the Face ID from the iPhone 12 should be slightly better in terms of speed - even in this case, don't look for differences of a few seconds. Neither of the compared devices has an expansion slot for an SD card, on the side of both devices you will only find a drawer for a nanoSIM. Both devices also have eSIM support, so you can only enjoy 5G on the latest iPhone 12, on the iPhone 11 you have to make do with 4G/LTE. Currently, however, 5G is not a decisive factor for the Czech Republic. We will have to wait for proper 5G support in the country.

Batteries and charging

When Apple introduces new iPhones, it never talks about the exact capacity of the batteries in addition to the RAM memory. Different companies have to take care of determining the battery capacity of new iPhones by disassembling them, but this year it was different - Apple had to have its new products certified by the Brazilian regulatory authority for electronics. Thanks to this, we learned that the iPhone 12 has a battery of the exact size of 2815 mAh. As for the older iPhone XR, it offers a battery of the exact size of 2942 mAh - which means that it has a bit of an advantage. On the other hand, Apple states in the original materials that the iPhone 12 has the upper hand when it comes to video playback – specifically, it should last up to 17 hours on a single charge, while the XR "only" lasts 16 hours. As for audio playback, in this case Apple claims the same result for both devices, namely 65 hours on a single charge. You can charge both devices with up to a 20W charging adapter, which means that the battery will go from 0% to 50% charge in just 30 minutes. Both compared devices can be charged wirelessly at a power of 7,5 W, while the iPhone 12 now has MagSafe wireless charging, thanks to which you can charge the device at up to 15 W. Neither of the compared devices is capable of reverse charging. Please note that if you order an iPhone 12 or iPhone XR from the Apple.cz website, you will not receive EarPods or a charging adapter – only a cable.

Design and display

As for the construction of the body of both of these devices, you can look forward to aircraft aluminum - the sides of the device are not shiny like in the case of the Pro version - so you would look for differences in the chassis of the iPhone 12 and XR in vain. Differences in construction can be seen in the front glass that protects the display. While the iPhone 12 offers a brand new glass called Ceramic Shield, the iPhone XR offers the classic Gorilla Glass on the front. As for Ceramic Shield glass, it was developed by Corning, which is also responsible for Gorilla Glass. As the name suggests, Ceramic Shielded glass works with ceramic crystals that are applied at high temperatures. Thanks to this, Ceramic Shield is up to 4 times more durable than classic Gorilla Glass. As for the back, in both cases you will find the aforementioned Gorilla Glass. If we look at the water resistance side, the iPhone 12 offers resistance for 30 minutes at a depth of up to 6 meters, the iPhone XR for 30 minutes at a maximum depth of 1 meter. Apple will not accept a claim for either device if the device has been damaged by water.

One of the biggest differences that can be seen in both compared devices is the display. If we look at the iPhone 12, we find that this brand new Apple phone finally offers an OLED panel labeled Super Retina XDR, while the iPhone XR offers a classic LCD labeled Liquid Retina HD. The size of both displays is 6.1″, both of them support True Tone, wide color range P3 and Haptic Touch. The iPhone 12 Pro display then supports HDR and has a resolution of 2532 x 1170 resolution at 460 pixels per inch, while the iPhone XR display does not support HDR and its resolution is 1792 x 828 resolution at 326 pixels per inch. The contrast ratio of the display of the "twelve" is 2: 000, for the "XR" this ratio is 000: 1. The maximum brightness of both displays is 1400 nits, and the iPhone 1 can "conjure up" up to 625 nits in HDR mode. The size of the iPhone 12 is 1200 mm x 12 mm x 146,7 mm, while the iPhone XR is 71,5 mm x 7,4 mm x 150,9 mm (H x W x D). The iPhone 75,7 weighs 8,3 grams, while the iPhone XR weighs 12 grams.

Camera

Bigger differences between the iPhone 12 and XR can also be observed in the case of the camera. The iPhone 12 offers a dual 12 Mpix photo system with an ultra-wide-angle lens (aperture f/2.4) and a wide-angle lens (f/1,6), while the iPhone XR offers a single 12 Mpix wide-angle lens (f/1.8). Compared to the iPhone XR, the "twelve" offers Night mode and Deep Fusion, both compared photo systems offer optical image stabilization, True Tone flash, portrait mode with improved bokeh and depth of field control. The iPhone 12 boasts 2x optical zoom and up to 5x digital zoom, while the XR only offers 5x digital zoom. The new "twelve" also boasts Smart HDR 3 support for photos, while the iPhone XR only supports Smart HDR for photos. As for video recording, the 12 can record in HDR Dolby Vision mode at 30 FPS, which is the only "twelve" iPhone in the world that can do it. In addition, it offers recording in 4K at up to 60 FPS, just like the XR. The iPhone 12 then supports an extended dynamic range up to 60 FPS, the XR then "only" at 30 FPS. Both devices have a 3x digital zoom when shooting, the iPhone 12 also has a 2x optical zoom. Compared to the XR, the iPhone 12 offers audio zoom, QuickTake video and time-lapse in night mode. Both devices can then record slow-motion footage in 1080p resolution at up to 240 FPS, there is also support for time-lapse video with stabilization and stereo recording.

Since both devices offer Face ID, the front camera has the TrueDepth label - but still, certain differences can be observed. While the iPhone 12 has a 12 Mpix TrueDepth front camera, the iPhone XR then has a 7 Mpix TrueDepth front camera. The aperture of both these cameras is f/2.2, at the same time both devices support Retina Flash. The iPhone 12 then supports Smart HDR 3 for photos on the front camera, while the iPhone XR "only" supports Smart HDR for photos. Both devices feature portrait mode with improved bokeh and depth-of-field control, and extended dynamic range for video at 30 FPS. The iPhone 12 then offers cinematographic video stabilization in up to 4K resolution, the XR at a maximum of 1080p. "Twelve" can also record video in 4K at up to 60 FPS, "XRko" only in 1080p at a maximum of 60 FPS. In addition, the front camera of the iPhone 12 is capable of Night mode, Deep Fusion and QuickTake video, and both devices are capable of Animoji and Memoji.

If you like bright colors, you will be delighted with both devices. iPhone 12 offers blue, green, red PRODUCT(RED), white and black colors, iPhone XR then blue, white, black, yellow, coral red and red PRODUCT(RED) colors. The new "twelve" is then available in three sizes, 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, and the iPhone XR is available in two sizes, 64 GB and 128 GB.
