After five months of waiting, we got the official presentation of the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro phones. The company has been baiting them since the Google I/O conference in May. Especially in the form of the 7 Pro model, it is supposed to be the best that Google can currently do in the field of hardware. But is it enough to be a full-fledged competition for the king of the mobile market in the form of the iPhone 14 Pro Max?

Display

Both have a 6,7-inch display, but that's where most of the similarities end. The Pixel 7 Pro has a finer resolution, at 1440 x 3120 pixels versus 1290 x 2796 pixels, which translates to 512 ppi for Google versus 460 ppi for the iPhone. But on the contrary, it will provide an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz, the Pixel ends at the same value, but starts at 10 Hz. Then there is the maximum brightness. The iPhone 14 Pro Max reaches 2000 nits, Google's new product only manages 1500 nits. Google didn't even give its top-of-the-line phone a Gorilla Glass Victus+ cover, because there's a version without that plus at the end.

Dimensions

The size of the display already determines the overall size, when it is clear that both models belong to the largest phones. However, even though the new Pixel is larger in plan and thicker in thickness, it is significantly lighter. Of course, the materials used are to blame. But Google collects plus points for solving the output for lenses, when thanks to its flat solution the phone does not wobble when working on a flat surface.

  • Google Pixel 7 Pro dimensions: 162,9 x 76,6 x 8,9 mm, weight 212 g
  • Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max dimensions: 160,7 x 77,6 x 7,9 mm, weight 240 g

Cameras

Just as Apple improved not only the hardware but also the software, Google also focused not only on improving the hardware parameters for the top of its portfolio. It is true, however, that he was also appropriately inspired by the first mentioned, when he brought his equivalent of the filmmaking mode and also the macro mode. But the paper values are quite impressive, especially for the telephoto lens.

  • Main camera: 50 MPx, 25mm equivalent, pixel size 1,22µm, aperture ƒ/1,9, OIS

Performance and battery

Apple used the A14 Bionic chip in its 16 Pro models, which, of course, still has virtually none in terms of competition. Google is at the beginning of its journey, and it does not rely on Qualcomm or Samsung, i.e. their Snapdragons and Exynos, but tries to come up with its own solution (following Apple's model), and that is why it has already come up with the second generation of the Tensor G2 chip, which should be about 60% more powerful than its predecessor.

It is manufactured with 4nm technology and has eight cores (2×2,85 GHz Cortex-X1 & 2×2,35 GHz Cortex-A78 & 4×1,80 GHz Cortex-A55). A 16 Bionic is also 4nm but "only" 6-core (2×3,46 GHz Everest + 4×2,02 GHz Sawtooth). In terms of RAM, it has 6 GB, although iOS does not eat as much as Android. Google packed 12 GB of RAM into its new device. The iPhone's battery is 4323 mAh, the Pixel's 5000 mAh. You should be able to charge both to 50% battery capacity in 30 minutes. Pixel 7 Pro can do 23W wireless charging, iPhone only 15W MagSafe wireless charging.

Made by Google

Even though Google expects a hit and is preparing for a flurry of pre-orders, that doesn't change the fact that as long as it has limited scope, it will have limited sales. It does not officially work in the Czech Republic, so if you are interested in the new product, you have to do so through gray imports. With the Google Pixel 7 Pro starting at $899, the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1 overseas, so there's a significant price difference that Google hopes will sway hesitant buyers.
