At the beginning of August, Samsung presented its Galaxy Watch5 Pro, and at the beginning of September, Apple presented the Apple Watch Ultra. Both watch models are designed for demanding people, both have a titanium case, sapphire glass and both are the pinnacle of their manufacturers. But which of these two smartwatches is better?

Both Samsung and Apple are simply confusing us. The Pro designation belonging to Apple is now widely used by Samsung, while the Ultra designation used by Samsung is already used by Apple for its products. But he renamed his durable smart watch most likely to differentiate himself from the competition. It is rather unlikely that he would refer to the M1 Ultra chip.

Design and materials

Apple has been betting on titanium for many years with its premium Apple Watch, which differed from steel and aluminum mainly due to this material, and also gave them sapphire glass. So Samsung also resorted to titanium, but instead of Gorilla Glass, they also used sapphire. In this respect, both models have nothing to blame - iWe will not judge if there are sapphire glasses on it yet, because it is true that not all of them have to be at 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness (this is exactly the value that Samsung states). In appearance, both are also based on previous versions of their respective manufacturers' watches with a few variations.

Samsung ditched the rotating bezel and shrunk the case from 46mm to 45mm, although it's taller overall. Apple, on the other hand, made it larger when it reached 49 mm (they are 44 mm wide), mainly by strengthening the bezel of the watch, so that they don't mind some banging, for example, against a rock. One thing is clear - the Apple Watch Ultra is a durable watch for the first time, even with its standardized orange details. The Samsung Galaxy Watch5 Pro only has a red border on one button and has a more subdued, inconspicuous design. But it is also worth mentioning the weight. The Apple Watch Ultra weighs 61,3 g, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro 46,5 g.

Display and durability

The Galaxy Watch5 has a 1,4" Super AMOLED display with a diameter of 34,6 mm and a resolution of 450 x 450 pixels. Apple Watch Ultra has a 1,92" LTPO OLED display with a resolution of 502 x 410. In addition, they have a peak brightness of 2000 nits. Both can Always On. We have already talked about titanium and sapphire, both models also comply with the standard MIL-STD 810H, but Apple's solution is dust-resistant according to IP6X and water-resistant up to 100 meters, Samsung's only up to 50 m. In short, this means that you can swim with the Galaxy Watch5 Pro, and even dive with the Apple Watch Ultra.

Performance and memory

How powerful the watch is is very difficult to judge. Given the different platforms (watchOS vs. Wear OS) and the fact that these are the latest offerings from their respective manufacturers, they're sure to be smooth-running and can now handle anything you throw at them. The question is more about the future. Samsung reached for last year's chip, which it also put in the Galaxy Watch4, i.e. its Exynos W920, although Apple increased the number to the S8 chip, but perhaps only artificially, which is no stranger to watch chips. The Galaxy Watch5 Pro has 16 GB of built-in memory and 1,5 GB of RAM. The internal memory of the Apple Watch Ultra is 32 GB, the RAM memory is not yet known.

Battery

36 hours - this is the endurance officially stated by Apple itself during normal use of its watch. In contrast, Samsung declares a full 3 days or 24 hours with active GPS. The wireless charging of his watch also supports that 10W, Apple does not specify it. It's simply a pity that the Apple Watch still has a weak battery life. Although Apple has worked on it, it would like to add more. But it is true that the endurance is different from user to user and you may reach higher values. In that case, you would of course get further with the Galaxy Watch5 Pro. Their battery has a capacity of 590 mAh, which is not yet known in the Apple Watch.

Other specifications

The Apple Watch Ultra has Bluetooth 5.3, while its competitor has Bluetooth 5.2. Ultra Apple also leads with dual-band GPS, a depth gauge, support for ultra-broadband connection or a loud speaker with a power of 86 decibels. Of course, both watches can measure a number of health functions or route navigation.

Price

According to paper values, it clearly plays into the hands of Apple, which practically loses only in the area of endurance. This is also why its solution is disproportionately more expensive, because for the price of an Apple Watch Ultra you would buy two Galaxy Watch5 Pros. They will therefore cost you CZK 24, while the Samsung watch costs CZK 990 or CZK 11 in the case of the version with LTE. The Apple Watch also has this, and without the option of choosing.
