Tuesday was a complete holiday for apple fans. We got to see the traditional September keynote, at which the new Apple Watch and iPads were introduced, among other things, albeit only online. Alongside the Apple Watch Series 6, which are loaded with many new functions, the more affordable Apple Watch SE has also been added to the portfolio of the Californian giant. However, you can already get last year's Apple Watch Series 5 for a very similar price. Which watch should you choose to get the best device in terms of performance and support? We will look at the comparison of both watches, that is, the new SE and last year's Series 5, in this article.
Design, sizes and display
As for the design of the watch, these are almost indistinguishable pieces and inexperienced users could confuse them. Both products, like all Apple watches, have a square shape. If we focus on the sizes, both the Apple Watch SE and the Series 5 are offered in 40 and 44 mm versions, while in the Czech Republic we will only see devices in aluminum design. The display is almost identical for both products, with the difference that the Apple Watch Series 5 supports Always-On mode. This is by no means a revolutionary function, and in this case it depends whether you are one of the users who are excited about Always-On, or you despise this display function, as it can cause faster battery drain.
Apple Watch Series 5:
Hardware specifications
Both models have the Apple S5 chip, which in terms of performance is absolutely identical to the one in the Series 4. After the release of the Apple Watch Series 5, which happened last year, we even saw all kinds of information that the S5 processor is only renamed the S4 processor found in the Series 4. The storage of both watches is a respectable 32 GB, and if we take into account the size of the watchOS applications, together with the recorded music and a few photos, then I definitely do not think that you should have a problem with this storage - after all these days there are individuals who own an iPhone with 16 GB of storage. The question for now is how the battery life will fare - but we'll be bringing you an Apple Watch SE review soon to read more.
Apple Watch SE:
Sensors and functions
Both the Apple Watch SE and the Series 5 then contain a gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS sensor, heart rate monitor and compass. The only thing the newer model lacks is an ECG sensor, which, in my opinion, the vast majority of users don't even need. If you own an Apple Watch with ECG capability, you'll agree with me that you used it regularly the first week after you bought it, and then completely forgot about the feature. However, if our readers are pedantic about health, the absence of the option to measure the EKG may be crucial for them. The good news then is that both the Series 5 and SE feature Fall Detection, along with an emergency call option. Water resistance to a depth of 50 meters is a matter of course for both models.
Availability and price
As we mentioned above, the Apple Watch SE, as well as the Apple Watch Series 5, are available in 40 and 44 millimeter versions. It is absolutely the same in the case of coloring – space gray, silver and gold colors are available for both compared models. The Apple Watch SE will then cost you CZK 7 in the 990 mm size, the larger 40 mm variant then costs CZK 44. The starting price of the Series 8 was then CZK 790 for the 5mm version and CZK 11 for the 690mm version. At the moment, however, you can buy a Series 40 at various bazaars for around 12 crowns - in this case, the question remains, however, about the warranty, the age of the battery, general functionality and possible wear and tear.

In short, there is no point in buying an SE as long as fives are available.
Quite the contrary
The Watch S4 and possibly the S3 could also be included in the comparison, as the SE could be placed roughly between these two models. The SE is not meant to be a development grade of the S5.
Hello, thanks for your opinion, however, I don't think the SE belongs between the Apple Watch Series 4 and 3. The Series 4 does have an EKG, but that's the only feature they have in addition to the SE. The Apple Watch SE has a compass and also 32 GB of storage, and for me you will use these options more in practical life than the EKG.
So I have no idea if my version has a compass or not. I never looked for it or found out. The compass is in the iPhone. If I'm without an iPhone, I don't foresee the need to use the compass. If I were to be anywhere where I might want to look for something or find my way around, I will 100% have my iPhone with me and I will definitely use the compass on it.
As for storage, I have no idea how much memory any model has, let alone mine. As you yourself stated, it is practically irrelevant information. I have an EKG and it is for me (and probably most regular users) a function just for interest and to try, nothing more. Which you also confirmed yourself. So, from a practical point of view, I agree that SEs are more like a four without an EKG, so it's like I have something between a four and a three. It needs a little more to make it five.
I personally use the compass a lot, it's honestly pointless for me to pull out my iPhone when I can do the given thing relatively comfortably directly on the watch. Personally, I think the Apple Watch SE is somewhere between the Series 4 and 5, but it's worth it considering it's a new model and at a fairly reasonable price. The upgrade from Series 4 is very individual, not worth it for many users, but if you use the compass like me, it is an interesting piece.
