Alongside the new iPhone 14 and the Apple Watch, Apple also introduced AirPods Pro headphones of the 2nd generation. Compared to the previous series, these are proud of a number of great novelties and gadgets, thanks to which they again move several steps forward. We have been waiting quite a long time for this second series. Her arrival has been rumored for months, with some sources even expecting a much earlier introduction.

After all, this is precisely why the new series revolved around a lot of speculation and leaks. Recently, the arrival of lossless audio or a more modern Bluetooth codec was most often mentioned, but this did not come true in the end. Even so, AirPods Pro 2nd generation definitely have a lot to offer. In this article, we will therefore compare the first and second generation Apple AirPods Pro headphones.

Design

First of all, let's look at the design itself. Even before the introduction of AirPods Pro 2, there were a number of speculations and leaks that talked about a rather radical change in design. According to some reports, Apple should have removed the feet and brought the headphones closer to the Beats Studio Buds in terms of appearance. But nothing like that happened in the final. The design has not changed, and the legs themselves have also remained the same, which coincidentally have received an interesting improvement. They now support touch control, which can be used to control playback volume, for example.

At first glance, the design remains essentially the same. The only change is the integration of touch control, which, of course, cannot be seen by the naked eye. As far as the color processing is concerned, the AirPods Pro 2nd generation headphones have the same appearance in this one too, and therefore rely on a white, elegant design. Of course, there is also the option of free engraving on the case.

Sound quality

Of course, with headphones in general, the sound quality is perhaps the most important. In this regard, the AirPods Pro 2 have improved significantly, specifically thanks to the brand new Apple H2 chip. It specifically takes care of a significantly better mode of active noise suppression, a permeability mode and even comes with a brand new feature called Personalized Spatial Audio. Practically, it is a personalized surround sound, which is set directly according to the shape of the ears of a particular apple player. In terms of software, Apple has certainly done so and clearly benefits from the new H2 chipset.

But to make matters worse, the Cupertino giant also came up with a new driver and its own amplifier, which is also supposed to push the sound quality to a whole new level. So the changes in the new generation are both software and hardware, thanks to which the quality moves forward.

Function

The first AirPods Pro offered an active ambient noise cancellation mode and a transmittance mode. As we mentioned above, the second generation takes these options even further. As for the active suppression of ambient noise, Apple promises up to twice the efficiency in this respect. However, it is more interesting in throughput mode. This mode is newly adaptive and can react to sounds from the surroundings, when it recognizes, for example, the noise of heavy equipment, which then reduces it in such a way that it is worth listening at all. Even so, it continues to mix other sounds into the music, thanks to which the apple-picker does not have to worry about missing something from the surroundings.

It is also an interesting novelty Customizing surround sound. In this case, the TrueDepth camera on your iPhone (X and newer) can directly capture the shape of your ears and optimize the sound accordingly to provide the highest possible quality. You practically create your own, completely personalized profile based on the specific and detailed shape of your ears. At the same time, the 2nd generation AirPods Pro will be delivered with a total of four ear tips – because the brand new XS size is coming, the smallest so far.

Battery life

The new generation has also improved with regard to battery life. The 2nd generation AirPods Pro can play for up to 6 hours on a single charge, while in combination with the charging case they offer a total endurance of up to 30 hours. This is 2 hours better endurance per charge compared to the previous generation and overall, including the case, the new AirPods Pro 2 have improved by 6 hours. So in this regard, Apple has hit the nail on the head and given its users exactly what they want in a wireless product – better battery life.

As for charging itself, the wireless charging case continues to rely on the Lightning connector. Even before the show, there was a fairly extensive discussion about the used connector, in which Apple fans were divided into two camps. According to some, Apple should have deployed a USB-C port by now. However, this has not happened yet. In addition to using a cable, the wireless charging case can be charged via a wireless charger (Qi standard) or with the help of MagSafe.

Price

In terms of change, no change awaits us. AirPods Pro 2nd generation are available for CZK 7, just like their predecessors. With the introduction of the new series, Apple also ended the sale of the original AirPods Pro headphones, which can no longer be purchased directly from Apple. But what is more interesting is that after the introduction of AirPods Pro 290nd generation, the price of AirPods 2nd and 2rd generation has increased.
