In January 2021, the audio social network Clubhouse went public. Users of this network could create public or private rooms or join already created ones. If someone in a strange room invited them to the stage and they accepted the invitation, it was only possible to communicate with the other members using voice. The popularity of Clubhouse has grown sharply, especially during the restrictive measures caused by the coronavirus pandemic, which of course has not escaped the attention of other large developers. One of the alternatives that has recently come to the market is Greenroom, which is behind the well-known company Spotify. But I wonder why now?

Clubhouse had a stamp of exclusivity, but its popularity is now rapidly declining

When you wanted to register for Clubhouse, you had to own an iPhone or iPad, and you also had to be given an invitation by one of the users. Thanks to this, the service has been extremely popular among people across generations since the beginning. Its popularity was also caused by the coronavirus pandemic, when the meeting of people was largely limited, so drinking, concerts and educational workshops were often moved to the Clubhouse. However, the measures were gradually loosened, the concept of an audio social network came into view, more and more Clubhouse accounts were created, and it was not so easy for the end customer to find a room that would be able to capture the interest of its theme.

Other companies came in with copies - some more, some less functional. Spotify's Greenroom application has done quite well, it is functionally comparable to its competitors and even surpasses them in certain aspects. A huge advantage is that you can use both iPhone and Android devices to register, and you don't even need a Spotify account. So far, however, it has not been able to garner the kind of discussion in the media that Clubhouse has. And that's not really surprising.

The concept of an audio network is interesting, but difficult to sustain in the long term

If, like me, you've spent more time at the Clubhouse, you'll agree that you're in for a treat here. You think you're just going to drop in here for a moment, but after a few hours of talking, you find out that he hasn't done any work yet. Sure, at the time when all the businesses were closed, the platform replaced our social contact, but now most social people prefer to spend time somewhere in a cafe, theater or on a walk with friends. At that moment, it is incredibly difficult to set aside time for calls on audio platforms.

It's different with other social networks. Posting a photo on Instagram, writing a status via Facebook or creating a non-professional video via TikTok only takes a few minutes. However, in today's fast-paced world, audio platforms have no chance of catching on in my opinion. You may have wondered what about professional influencers who take significantly more time to create content? In short, the concept of audio platforms won't save them either, since you have to be connected in real time and for a relatively long time to listen to their opinions. And that's exactly what most people aren't capable of due to time constraints either. With Instagram, TikTok, but also YouTube, consuming content only takes a few minutes, and if you don't have time at the moment, you can postpone browsing for later. However, the Clubhouse concept, which was very nice during the coronavirus era, is now only for a few less busy people.
