The MagSafe battery intended for the entire iPhone 12 series (and future ones) was already an open secret. Apple has been working on it for quite a long time, because why would we get it until a moment before the presentation of the iPhone 13 and not together with the launch of the current generation. And even if its capacity is dismal and the price is extreme, it will offer something we haven't seen from Apple before - reverse charging.

V Apple Online Store you will find a rather sparse description for the battery. Here, Apple highlights the intuitive design and ease of use, and mentions charging in a short paragraph: "The MagSafe battery can be charged even faster with a 27W or stronger charger, such as that supplied with the MacBook. Then when you need a wireless charger, just connect the Lightning cable and you can charge wirelessly with a power of up to 15 W." But the important thing is not said here.

Reverse charging

Apple published an article on its support website How to use a MagSafe battery. And while there's no mention of reverse charging, here's how the technology works in the case of his new battery. You can charge the battery with a Lightning cable, but it can also be charged by the iPhone itself, to which it is connected, if it is connected to a power source through its Lightning connector. The company says here that it's handy if you have your iPhone connected via a cable as part of CarPlay, or if you're downloading photos to your Mac, etc.

Finally, here we have the first swallow, in the form of this technology, which is already commonly used by the competition. But the important thing is that it is primarily a function of the iPhone and not so much the MagSafe Battery itself. Perhaps this is why its use with iPhone 12 is tied to a new iOS update. So what could this mean for the future?

Of course, nothing less than the ability to put a wireless charging case for AirPods on the iPhone's back, which only charges your iPhone. For now, it would have to be connected to the power supply, but the competition can do it without it, so why can't Apple debug this to everyone's satisfaction? Of course, other devices could be charged in the same way, apart from the Apple Watch and iPhones themselves.

The appearance of the original Smart Battery Case, which was an Apple battery with an iPhone cover:

Money for first, second and third place

This is the lighter novelty that the MagSafe Battery has brought. But let no one tell me that it is justified to pay for such a small capacity – around 2 mAh – such unchristian money, i.e. 900 CZK. Even the most powerful, largest and best power banks on the market will slowly not reach such prices. While you can charge the iPhone 2 roughly only once using the MagSafe battery, with the 890 mAh competition you can easily achieve this more than five times, and you can also charge the iPad and, of course, any other device. Charging is elegant with a MagSafe battery, but the question is whether it's worth it when you can't charge older iPhones or Android devices with it.

In such a case, it might be worthwhile to really listen to reason and ignore modern wireless trends. But it is true that if your priority is design, then there is simply nothing to complain about. Visually, this is a great device, but that's about it from my point of view. What do you think about the MagSafe battery? Do you like it and have you ordered it, are you waiting for the first reviews, or are you not impressed? Let us know in the comments.
