One of the less visible innovations introduced this year in iOS 7 is the ability to add custom keyboard shortcuts to third-party applications when using an external keyboard. Those of you who use OmniOutliner may have noticed that you can use the same keyboard shortcuts in the Mac version.

Currently, keyboard shortcuts are only supported in a handful of apps like Safari, Mail, Pages, or Numbers. There is no list of all keyboard shortcuts, so this article lists the ones that work in iOS 7.0.4. Apple and other developers are sure to add more over time.

Safari

  • ⌘L opening an address (Similar to Mac, the address bar is selected for URL or search. However, the search results cannot be navigated using the arrows.)
  • ⌘T opening a new panel
  • ⌘W closing the current pamel
  • ⌘R page reload
  • ⌘. stop loading the page
  • ⌘G a ⌘⇧G switching between search results on the page (However, starting a search on the page is displayed on the display.)
  • ⌘[ a ⌘] navigation back and forward

Unfortunately, there is no shortcut for switching between panels yet.

Email

  • ⌘N creating a new email
  • ⌘⇧D send mail (This shortcut also works in applications with implemented sharing via mail.)
  • deletion of marked mail
  • ↑/↓ selecting an email address from the pop-up menu in the To, Cc and Bcc fields
