Apple's laboratories at the time of the development of the first generation iPhone held many secrets, some of which still have not surfaced. Today, however, one of them was revealed on Twitter by former software designer Imran Chaudhri, who participated in the breakthrough device.

Do you know what the first Macintosh, the Concorde plane, the Braun ET66 calculator, the movie Blade Runner and the Sony Walkman have in common? We understand that you may be wondering, because only a very small group of Apple employees know the answer to this question. The answer is that all of the things mentioned are cited as inspiration for the design of the very first iPhone.

In addition to these things, the developers were inspired by, for example, the now legendary film 2001: A Space Odyssey, industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss, The Beatles, the Apollo 11 mission, or the Polaroid camera. The developers also found further inspiration in the Finnish architect Eer Saarinen, Arthur C. Clark, who he just wrote the book 2001: A Space Odyssey, the American recording studio Warp Records and, of course, NASA itself.

But the most interesting thing is the fact that there is not a single mobile phone or any communication related product on the list. So you can really see at Apple that when the first iPhone was designed, it was created as a completely unique device. It was created simply because Steve Jobs in particular, but also many Apple employees, were dissatisfied with the phones of the time, specifically with how they looked and worked.

Of course, we can also guess who contributed the given inspiration. Steve Jobs loved the Beatles and grew up at the time when man landed on the moon for the first time (he was 14 at the time), so he was a big admirer of NASA. On the contrary, Braun and Warp Records are the favorite brands of Apple's chief designer, Jony Ive.

Imran Chaudhri worked as a designer at Apple and was involved in the development of products such as Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple Watch. He left the company in 2017 to found the startup Hu.ma.ne.
