On the occasion of the WWDC 2020 developer conference, Apple presented the iOS 14 operating system, which boasted a significant amount of interesting news. Apple brought interesting changes for the home screen, which also added the so-called application library (App Library), we finally got the option of placing widgets on the desktop or changes for Messages. The giant also devoted part of the presentation to a new product called App Clips, or application clips. It was a rather interesting gadget that should allow the user to play smaller parts of applications even without installing them.

In practice, application clips are supposed to work quite simply. In this case, the iPhone uses its NFC chip, which just needs to be attached to the relevant clip and a context menu will automatically open allowing playback. Since these are only "fragments" of the original apps, it is clear that they are severely limited. Developers must keep the file size to a maximum of 10 MB. The giant promised huge popularity from this. The truth is that the feature would be perfect for sharing scooters, bikes and more, for example - just simply attach and you're done, without having to wait a long time for a specific application to be installed.

Where did the app clips go?

More than two years have passed since the introduction of the news called application clips, and the function is practically not talked about at all. Exactly opposite. Rather, it falls into oblivion and many apple growers have no idea that such a thing actually exists. Of course, our support is minimal. Worse, the same problem is also faced by apple sellers in Apple's homeland - the United States of America - where Apple is mostly in the role of a so-called trendsetter. Therefore, in short, despite the good idea, application clips failed. And for several reasons.

iOS App Clips

First of all, it is necessary to mention that Apple did not come with this news at the best moment. As we already indicated in the beginning, the function came together with the operating system iOS 14, which was presented to the world in June 2020. In the same year, the world was swept by the global pandemic of the disease Covid-19, due to which there was a fundamental limitation of social contact and people so they spent most of their time at home. Something like this was absolutely critical for the application clips, from which the avid travelers could benefit the most.

But to App clips could even become a reality, the developers themselves must react to them. But they don't want to go through this step twice, and it has a rather important justification. In the online world, it's important for developers to keep users coming back, or at least sharing some of their personal data. In such a case, it may also involve simple installation and subsequent registration. At the same time, it's not exactly common for people to uninstall their apps, which presents another opportunity to do something about. But if they give up this option and start offering such "fragments of applications", the question arises, why would anyone download the software at all? It is therefore a question of whether the application clips will move somewhere and possibly how. This gadget has quite a lot of potential and it would definitely be a shame not to use it.
