Server & Hosting AppleInsider recently reported the presence of 53 new downloadable languages for VoiceOver in the Mac OS X Lion beta. VoiceOver is the system's voice response, which helps especially the visually impaired, where a synthetic voice reads all the texts on the screen for you. Czech and Slovak were also among the new languages, so speculation began to spread as to whether we would really see native Czech and Slovak localization in the new system.

We were able to meet the VoiceOver function with Czech and Slovak voices already in the iPhone, so it is not a hot new thing. The same menu of languages with a Czech voice is available here Susan and Slovak Laura. Apple de facto did that by taking voice synthesis from the iPhone (by the way, very successful, even in the Czech version) and transferring it to Mac OS. But what will happen with the Czech language?

The implementation of the Czech synthetic voice probably does not directly mean that the Czech localization should appear in Lion, which will be presented in the summer. However, unlike a colleague Janeček rules I'm not that skeptical. Take for example the last Apple Event, the introduction of the iPad 2. In contrast to the last iPhone, we reached the first 26 countries in the world where the iPad will be sold this month, i.e. the second wave of sales. This means that Apple products are selling better and better here in the heart of Europe, and Apple is taking notice.

We also didn't get iPhone localization right away when the 3G model was introduced, but we had to wait until mid-2009, when iOS 3.0 was released, which, by the way, was the same time we got Snow Leopard. So I would be rather optimistic that Czech and other European languages will come to Mac OS X, just as it was in the case of iPhone and iPad, and why not right away in version 10.7.

Although our purchasing power cannot match that of America, Great Britain or Germany, it is still not negligible and generates pleasant profits for Apple. Otherwise, I would not consider that new languages did not appear in the Lion beta installation. If they come, then more likely to GM or until the final version. All that remains is to wait until the summer. Hopefully, in the next quarter of a year, we will be able to jot down with pleasure "Oh, Zuzana..."
