We bring you a competition with Western Digital for prizes and five backup tips. Indeed, WD has declared April "backup month" and brings a clear challenge: "Don't get fooled by April fools and hit the backup button!" After all, it's your data, your memories, your life.

[do action=”quote”]Give a person a hard drive and they will have somewhere to store their data for days, teach them to use automatic backup software and you will help them keep their data forever.[/do]

You spend time saving your data on a computer or laptop disk. Everything that matters to you, from financial matters to documents that have even sentimental meaning for you. But you are only a small step away from a computer virus, a spilled cup of coffee or a stolen laptop bag and therefore only a step away from the complete loss of all data. Western Digital, the world's leading manufacturer of data storage devices, encourages users to create and practice their own backup program, which the company has summarized in five steps. The result is protection of personal digital data for years to come.

“Regardless of the platform of choice, we urge customers to back up all of their personal digital data that they only have stored. There's more to it than just buying another drive. We want to help customers feel confident that their digital lives are protected with automatic backup software such as WD SmartWare and WD's My Book Live personal cloud products. We want to send this backup call as a strong reminder of how valuable personal digital data is, a value that cannot be replaced by money, and how irreplaceable this data is and how much we don't want to lose it." says Daniel Mauerhofer, WD's Head of Public Relations for EMEA.

Unlike CDs, DVDs, and even cloud-based storage, an external drive with automatic backup is the best backup solution in terms of price, simplicity, reliability, speed, and security.

What is your backup plan?

Western Digital has prepared five-step backup tips to help you create a personal backup plan.

  • Don't wait until it's too late - reach for an external drive
Having data backed up means having no less than two copies of data that you consider important. External hard drives are a great way to back up. They offer high utility value, are fast and have a higher capacity than CDs or DVDs or USB flash drives.
  • Use backup software: Backup automatically. Don't mount the disc and be cool!
It's best not to rely on manual backups. You may forget or simply not be able to make a backup. It is also easy to make a mistake or forget something important. Use backup software like WD SmartWare to automate your backup process. The program is easy to use and creates a copy of your data reliably and automatically, keeps the individual steps in memory and warns you of any problems.
  • Keep copies of your data elsewhere: backup backup backup…
Always make sure you have at least two copies of your important folders and files. Multiple backups on different devices and in different locations reduce the risk of complete data loss. Keep in mind that simply moving important folders and files (that is, keeping only one copy of the data) from your computer to another drive is not a backup, but simply a data saver. Your documents are still at risk.
  • Create your own personal cloud!
Keep your data safely stored at home and still accessible. Your personal cloud solution with the My Book Live product line of external network drives not only provides data protection from your computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet, but also enables access to them from these devices.
  • Check your backup plan!
Your backup software will keep a report in memory of any problem encountered during automatic backups. Check if you've lost something important... it could be an important photo or video that you'll never be able to take again.

Our music files, photos or videos represent the digitized representation of the most precious memories and that is why it is so important that everyone realizes and knows how to keep these documents safely. Ever since WD launched the WD Passport and WD My Book Live product lines of external drives, the company has been making the backup process as easy as it gets.
