iOS 7 and OS X 10.9 Mavericks came with a useful auto-update feature that many users have been clamoring for. Thanks to them, they don't have to worry about manually downloading apps, the system takes care of everything for them, and they always have the latest versions of their app without having to open the App Store or Mac App Store.

On the other hand, not every update succeeds, it is not an exception when, due to an error in it, the application starts to crash right after launch or an important function stops working. This recently happened to Facebook, for example. If you catch in time that the update is bad, you will avoid waiting several weeks for repairs of serious errors. Therefore, it is better for some to turn off automatic updates, even if you lose an otherwise useful function. Here's how to do it:

iOS 7

  1. Open the system Settings and select iTunes and the App Store.
  2. Scroll down and turn off updates in the section Automatic downloads.
  3. Now, as before, you will need to download updates manually in the App Store.

OS X 10.9

  1. Open it System Preferences from the main bar (apple icon) and select from the menu App Store.
  2. Compared to iOS, there are more options here, for example, you can have updates automatically downloaded, but install them manually from the Mac App Store. Likewise, you can turn off/on the automatic installation of system applications or turn off the automatic search for applications completely.
  3. Uncheck the box to turn off automatic update installations Install application updates.
  4. Now it will be possible to perform updates only manually from the Mac App Store, as was the case with earlier versions of the system.
