With the arrival of OS X Mavericks, we finally got better support for multiple monitors. It is now possible to have a menu, a dock and a window for switching applications (heads-up display) on multiple monitors. But if you don't know exactly how the controls behave on multiple monitors, jumping from one display to another in the dock, for example, can feel a little messy. That's why we're bringing you instructions on how to get control over the dock's behavior on multiple monitors.

The important thing is that you can control and switch the dock at will between individual monitors only when you have it down. If you place it on the left or right, the dock will always appear on the far left or right of all displays.

1. You have auto hide dock turned on

If you have active auto-hiding of the dock, moving it between individual monitors is very simple.

  1. Move the mouse to the bottom edge of the screen where you want the dock to appear.
  2. The Dock will automatically appear right here.
  3. Together with the dock, the window for switching applications (heads-up display) is also moved to the given monitor.

2. You have the dock permanently on

If you have the dock permanently visible, you need to use a little trick to move it to the second monitor. The permanently visible dock is always displayed on the monitor that is set as primary. However, if you want to display it on a second monitor, follow these steps:

  1. Move the mouse to the bottom edge of the second monitor.
  2. Drag the mouse down once more and the dock will also appear on the second monitor.

3. You have an active full-screen application

The same trick works for applications in full-screen mode. Just move to the bottom edge of the monitor and drag the mouse downwards - the dock will come out, even if you have the application running in full-screen mode.
