With the arrival of OS X Mavericks, we finally got better support for multiple monitors. It is now possible to have a menu, a dock and a window for switching applications (heads-up display) on multiple monitors. But if you don't know exactly how the controls behave on multiple monitors, jumping from one display to another in the dock, for example, can feel a little messy. That's why we're bringing you instructions on how to get control over the dock's behavior on multiple monitors.
The important thing is that you can control and switch the dock at will between individual monitors only when you have it down. If you place it on the left or right, the dock will always appear on the far left or right of all displays.
1. You have auto hide dock turned on
If you have active auto-hiding of the dock, moving it between individual monitors is very simple.
- Move the mouse to the bottom edge of the screen where you want the dock to appear.
- The Dock will automatically appear right here.
- Together with the dock, the window for switching applications (heads-up display) is also moved to the given monitor.
2. You have the dock permanently on
If you have the dock permanently visible, you need to use a little trick to move it to the second monitor. The permanently visible dock is always displayed on the monitor that is set as primary. However, if you want to display it on a second monitor, follow these steps:
- Move the mouse to the bottom edge of the second monitor.
- Drag the mouse down once more and the dock will also appear on the second monitor.
3. You have an active full-screen application
The same trick works for applications in full-screen mode. Just move to the bottom edge of the monitor and drag the mouse downwards - the dock will come out, even if you have the application running in full-screen mode.
Hmm, such a guide would make sense if it addressed really problematic situations, such as arranging two desktops next to each other and one below them :)
I just installed Mavericks yesterday and one thing surprised me. When I have an application or open folder positioned so that it is on both monitors, only a portion of it is visible on one of them. Depending on where the cursor ends. Can this be changed somehow?
You can turn on the old mode that was in Mountain Lion... It's the last item in Mission Control...
The mentioned behavior with the dock seems ok to me, I have the dock down and hidden by default. But it would be good if the cmd+tab menu didn't move depending on where the dock was last, but was always displayed on all displays, which I don't think would matter. This is how it happens to me that I view the dock on one monitor, then do something on the other and do not deal with the dock. Then I want to switch the application cmd+tab and the menu appears on the monitor I'm not looking at, and that's only because the last time I reached for the dock there = I have to turn my head and it delays - this is just bullshit for the OS to guess so poorly , where I'm probably staring depending on where the dock is, which I often don't need to touch for hours.
A little OT: it would be nice if Apple finally solved the bug/feature that when I have a hidden dock, the applications are not in the place where it is hidden, able to use about 3-4 pixels of the screen (or how much it is). I don't see the reason for this behavior, I guess it was normal until 10.5 (Leopard) and then some smart head messed it up. At the same time, full screen applications do not leave any space at the bottom, and the dock is always hidden there, and it has no effect on its invocation.
