Who doesn't like apps. There are over a million apps in the App Store that make certain tasks easier for us every day, help us be productive, allow us to share and consume information, and even save lives. If you need something, there's usually an app for it. The App Store is a unique digital distribution where users can find all applications, easily purchase them and also follow the ratings of others or leave their own ratings.

App Store rating

Unfortunately, many users confuse the App Store with the support page and leave comments that don't really help anyone much. First of all, remember that your rating and review in the App Store is not for the developers, but for other users, who often decide whether the app is worth their money based on your experience. So we have some advice for rating in the App Store:

  1. Always write in Czech – If you shop in the Czech App Store, there is no reason why you should write your reviews in English. If you think that foreign developers read reviews in all countries, including small ones like the Czech Republic, we have to disabuse you. Only certain countries are essential for developers, namely the USA, Canada, Great Britain, or France and Germany. This is where the biggest income and also the most comments come from. Your English comment will probably not be read by any foreign developer, on the contrary, users who do not know English will have a hard time figuring out what you actually wrote about the application. If you want to report a bug or praise the developer, contact them directly (see below).
  2. Don't vent your frustration – Bugs in apps can be frustrating and ruin the entire app experience. The error could have occurred in several ways. The developer could have overlooked something, it could be a rare bug that didn't show up during beta testing, it could even happen when compiling the final build that was sent to Apple. If that happens, a one-star review might take some of that frustration out, but it won't help anyone. Instead, contact a developer (see below) who can actually help you with the problem, and your feedback can reveal the problem to be fixed in the next update. Only if you contact the developer and he shows no willingness to solve the problem even after a long time since sending, then one star is appropriate. Having to pay for the app again also no reason for one star, developers can't provide free updates forever, and your rating wouldn't reflect the app's true value, just your frustration with paying.
  3. Be to the point – "The app is useless" or "Really great thing" doesn't tell other users much about the app. No one wants you to write a comprehensive review, just a few main points is more than enough. If you like the app, tell others why (it looks good, it has this great feature,…), on the other hand, if it disappointed you, tell others what's wrong and what's missing. If it's a scam app, make it clear why others shouldn't buy it. A few factual sentences are enough.
  4. Be current – Is there a new update that fixed a bug that frustrated you before? Your review is not set in stone, edit it so others are not confused by a bug that is no longer in the app or a missing feature that a new update included. It only takes a minute of time, even if you only need to change the number of stars.

Add a review and rating

  • Open the App Store/iTunes and find the app you want to rate. Reviews can only be added for apps that you have purchased/downloaded.
  • In the application details, open the Reviews/Reviews and Ratings tab and press the Write a Review button.
  • Choose the number of stars, choose a suitable title summarizing your review, then write the text of the review and press Send (Submit).

Communication with developers

Most apps have their dedicated support page, usually on their own page or the developer page. You can always find the link in the application details. In iTunes, you can find a link to the developer's site under the application icon, in the App Store in the tab Details at the very bottom (Developer Website). You can find a direct link to the support page in the tab Reviews/Reviews and Ratings under the button AppSupport.

Each developer handles support differently, some will provide direct contact in the form of an email address, others handle support using a knowledge base forum with tickets or a contact form. If the developers are not Czech, you will have to formulate your problem in English. Describe your problem in as much detail as possible, the developer won't be able to tell much from the "app crashes" information. Tell us what makes the app crash, what exactly doesn't work, or what should work differently. In case of bugs, ideally also mention your device and operating system version.

If you miss a feature in the app or see room for improvement, it's okay to write to the developer in the same way. Many developers are open and happy to implement popular requests from users in a future update. Quick support on Twitter often works well too. You can usually find out the name of the account from the developer's website.

Always try to solve any problem with the application directly with the developer first, and use a negative rating as a last resort. Developers have no way to contact disgruntled users in the App Store, and they can't tell much from vague information in reviews. Muhammad must go to the mountain, not the other way around.

Finally, if there is no other way, Apple can be asked to Money Back, but no more than 1-2 times a year.
