The latest iOS 4.2.1 update brought quite a few significant changes. One of the most appreciated by users was definitely the launch of Find My iPhone service for free for all users.

However, immediately after the publication of this update, comments began to multiply that Find My iPhone services do not support older devices. However, thanks to the instructions contained in this article, you will find that everything works fine.

Find my iPhone is a service from Apple that was part of a paid MobileMe account until this Monday. With the arrival of iOS 4.2.1, people from the apple company decided that it would be good to make this service available to all owners of apple iDevices.

However, they put limitations. Only the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation, and iPad were supposed to support Find My iPhone, causing a firestorm of hate among their users who owned one of the older models. After reading this article, however, you will find out that you can also use this service on, for example, an iPhone 3G, etc.

Find My iPhone is a very useful service that can make your life much easier if you lose, for example, an iPhone 4. After logging in with your account on the me.com website, you can track the coordinates of where your device is located. That's not all this service has to offer.

The user is able to have a message sent to his device at any time (which you can scare off a potential thief), play a sound, lock the phone or delete data. You can therefore make the joy of the catch very unpleasant for a would-be thief. In addition, you have a good chance of finding the thief based on the location and getting your loved one back.

Instructions for activating Find My iPhone on older devices

We will need:

  • Newer iOS devices (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation, iPad),
  • older iOS devices (iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, etc.)

Steps on a newer iOS device:

1. Download the app on a newer iPhone

On the iPhone, we launch the App Store, from where we download the Find My iPhone application.

2. Account settings

Next, we go to the phone settings, specifically to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Add account... We select the "MobileMe" account, enter our user Apple ID and password. Then you just have to choose "Further".

3. Account Verification

If you don't have your account verified. Apple will send you an email with a link to authorize your Apple ID for MobileMe.

4. Launch the Find My iPhone application

After launching the application, log in to your created MobileMe account and confirm the Find My iPhone service. This completes the steps on a newer device (iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th generation, iPad).

Steps on an older iOS device:

Now we will perform the above procedure in exactly the same way on an older device and then you will see how the Find My iPhone service will work on older products as well. I personally tried it on an iPhone 3G, the result was great. Everything is going as it should.

If you don't own one of Apple's newer devices, you can ask your friends to help you with the steps for newer iOS devices. It is only about creating a MobileMe account and then logging in.

If you have multiple devices listed in the device list in the iPhone app, you can, for example, use one device to perform actions on another device without having to log in to the me.com website.

By this I mean mainly displaying the location, locking the phone, deleting data, sending a warning SMS or sound. Which is a big advantage in case of loss, because you won't have to carry e.g. a MacBook with you when searching, but only an iPhone will be enough.
