iTunes is not a complicated program. Although in its current form it is already somewhat overgrown, after basic orientation it can be very effective as a tool for synchronizing iOS devices with a computer. The following guide will help with that basic orientation.

The iTunes desktop application (download here) is divided into four basic parts. In the upper part of the window there are player controls and search. Just below them is a bar for switching between the types of content that iTunes displays (music, videos, apps, ringtones, etc.). The main part of the window is used for browsing the content itself and can be divided into two parts by displaying the left side panel (View > Show Sidebar). This panel also allows you to switch between types of content in given categories (eg artists, albums, songs, playlists in "Music").

Uploading content to iTunes is simple. Just drag the music files to the application window and it will put it in the appropriate category. In iTunes, the files can then be edited further, e.g. adding song information to the MP3 files (by right-clicking on the song/video and selecting the "Information" item).

How to sync and record music

1 step

For the first time, we connect the iOS device to a computer with iTunes installed with a cable (this can also be done via Wi-Fi, see below). iTunes will either start itself on the computer after connecting, or we will start the application.

If we are connecting an iOS device to a given computer for the first time, it will ask us if it can trust it. After confirmation and possibly entering the code, we will see either a standard content screen in iTunes, or the display will automatically switch to the content of the connected iOS device. An overview of connected devices with the option to switch between them is in the bar above the main part of the window.

After switching to the content of the connected iOS device, we will mainly use the left sidebar for navigation. In the subcategory "Summary" we can set backup, back up SMS and iMessage, make room in the connected iOS device, check for software updates, etc.

Wi-Fi synchronization is also turned on from here. This is then initiated automatically if the given iOS device is connected to power and to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer, or manually in the iOS device in Settings > General > Wi-Fi Sync with iTunes.

2 step

When we switch to the "Music" tab in the sidebar, the main part of the iTunes window is divided into six sections in which we can choose between synchronizing different types of music files. The music itself can be uploaded to the iOS device from there by playlists, genres, artists and albums. We don't have to go through the lists manually when looking for specific items, we can use the search.

Once we have selected everything we want to upload to the iOS device (also in other subcategories), we start the synchronization with the "Synchronize" button in the lower right corner of iTunes (or with the "Done" button to exit the iOS device, which will also offer synchronization in case of changes).

Alternative music recording

But before we leave the iOS device content view, let's look at the bottom of the "Music" subcategory. It displays the items that we have uploaded to the iOS device by dragging and dropping. In this way, you can record individual songs, but also entire albums or artists.

This is done in a view of your entire iTunes music library. We grab the selected song by pressing the left mouse button and drag it to the icon of the given iOS device in the left sidebar. If the panel is not displayed, after grabbing the song, it will pop up from the left side of the application window by itself.

If we are connecting an iOS device to a given computer for the first time and want to upload music to it, we must first enable synchronization by checking the "Synchronize music" box in the "Music" subcategory. In the event that we already have music recorded from elsewhere on the given iOS device, it will be deleted – each iOS device can only be synced to one local iTunes music library. Apple thus tries to prevent copying of content between the computers of several different users.

Before disconnecting the cable between the iOS device and the computer, do not forget to disconnect it first in iTunes, otherwise there is a risk of damage to the memory of the iOS device. The button for this is next to the name of the connected device in the upper left corner of the main part of the window.

On Windows, the procedure is almost identical, only the names of the control elements may differ.
