In the top bar of the macOS operating system, you can display all kinds of icons that can have different functions. While some icons are used to change system settings, others can be used to quickly access applications. In the right part of the top bar, you can also have the date and time displayed, among other things. Most of you would probably expect that when you tap on a date with the time, a small form of calendar will appear, for example, to quickly check what day a certain date falls on. Unfortunately, this will not happen - the notification center will open instead. Even so, there is an option to add a small calendar to the top bar.

How to display a small calendar in the top bar on Mac

As you probably already guessed from the introduction, there is no native option to display a small calendar in the top bar. But that's exactly where third-party app developers can make such an option available. Personally, I have been using the free Itsycal application for several years, which can display the current date in the top bar and also a small calendar when clicked, which is very practical. To install and set up Itsycal, follow these steps:

  • First, of course, you need to download the Itsycal app - just tap on this link.
  • This will take you to the developer's website, where you just need to click the button below Download.
  • Once the download is complete, you will see it itself application, which you drag into the Applications folder.
  • Once you do so, the app Itsycal double tap run.
  • Now after the first run you need to enable event access.
    • You can achieve this in System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy, where in the category Calendars enable Itsycal access.
  • After starting, it will be displayed in the top bar small calendar icon.
  • To reset the display and other options to tap the icon then click on the bottom right gear icon and finally move to Preferences..., where you can find everything you need. Don't forget to activate it too auto launch after login.

Quite frankly, I can't imagine functioning without Itsycal - I use it every day. I find it very inconvenient to have to open the native Calendar app and wait for it to load every time I check a date in the calendar. Thanks to Itsycal, I have the necessary data available immediately and anywhere in the system. Within Itsycal, among other things, you can set the display of the icon in the top bar, so this application itself can work with data from the Calendar application and display events in individual data. In order not to have the date twice in the top bar, it is necessary to hide it natively. Just go to System Preferences -> Dock and Menu Bar, where on the left click the option Clock, and then possibly tick off possibility Show day at week a Show date.
