The Apple Watch is often referred to as the best watch on the market. Apple took this position years ago, and it looks like it doesn't intend to change anything for now, although it has recently faced occasional criticism for the product's lack of innovation. But let's leave front-end functions and design aside for now and let's focus on water resistance. Apple Watch is not afraid of water and can be used, for example, to monitor swimming. But how do they compare to the competition?

About the water resistance of the Apple Watch

But in order to be able to compare at all, we must first look at the Apple Watch, or rather how resistant they are to water. On the other hand, Apple nowhere mentions the so-called degree of protection, which is given in the IPXX format and at first glance, it can be used to judge to what extent the given device is resistant to dust and water. For example, last year's generation iPhone 13 (Pro) boasts an IP68 degree of protection (according to the IEC 60529 standard) and can thus last for 30 minutes at a depth of up to six meters. The Apple Watch should be even better, but on the other hand, they are not waterproof and still have their limits.

Apple Watch Series 7

At the same time, it is necessary to mention which generation of Apple Watch it is. Apple Watch Series 0 and Series 1 are only resistant to spills and water, while they should not be submerged in water. Showering or swimming with the watch is therefore not recommended. Specifically, these two generations boast IPX7 certification and can withstand immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of one meter. Subsequently, Apple significantly improved the water resistance, thanks to which it is also possible to take the watch for swimming. According to the official specifications, the Apple Watch Series 2 and later are resistant to a depth of 50 meters (5 ATM). Last year's Apple Watch Series 7 also boasts IP6X dust resistance.

How is the competition?

Now let's get to the more interesting part. So how is the competition? Is Apple ahead in the field of water resistance, or is it lacking here? The first candidate is, of course, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4, which already gained a lot of attention when it entered the market. Currently, they are also referred to as the arch-enemy of the Apple Watch. The situation is practically the same with this model. It boasts a resistance of 5 ATM (up to 50 meters) and at the same time an IP68 degree of protection. They also continue to meet military MIL-STD-810G standards. Although these are not completely related to water resistance, they provide increased resistance in cases of falls, impacts and the like.

Another interesting competitor is the Venu 2 Plus model. This is no different in this case either, which is why here too we find water resistance up to a depth of 50 meters expressed as 5 ATM. It is practically the same in the case of Fitbit Sense, where we come across 5 ATM resistance in combination with IP68 degree of protection. We could go on like this for a really long time. So, if we generalize, we can clearly say that the standard of today's smart watches is resistance to a depth of 50 meters (5 ATM), which is met by the vast majority of models that are worth something. Therefore, the Apple Watch does not stand out in this regard, but it does not lose either.
