Apple has its iPhones, Samsung has its Galaxy S series phones. While the former usually presents four models of the latest series, the latter, due to its other large portfolio, only has three models. But if the smallest and largest models are directly competing with each other, who should the Galaxy S23+ stand against?

Whether we take the iPhone 14 or the iPhone 14 Pro, which have a 6,1" display, Samsung is also putting a 6,1" model against this duo in the form of the Galaxy S23. Then there is the iPhone 14 Pro Max, clearly fighting for the top mobile phone on the market, against which Samsung is pitting the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Even though Apple introduced the iPhone 14 Plus this year, it clearly lags behind Samsung's flagship in its specifications - display, cameras, charging. The Galaxy S23+ can thus be compared to perhaps only the largest of the iPhones, where it clearly loses. However, the devices are also very far apart in terms of price.

Samsung's Plus model experienced its heyday with the S20 generation. Then, however, interest in it somehow stopped and now it is the least sold phone of the S series. This may be precisely because customers do not know what competition to compare it to. So they prefer to reach for a cheaper basic model, or on the contrary, for the most equipped one, and even a little bigger and more expensive, but they know that they have the best in the world of Android.

They were recently published news, that Samsung intends to discontinue the Plus model in the future series (i.e. in the Galaxy S24 series). So it would release only two high-end phones with a classic design and of course its flexible Galaxy Z series phones to complement it. After all, most brands only release standard and professional models. Samsung's profits are also falling, at an eight-year low. It's obvious that the market is declining, but does it make sense to cancel a model that could still interest some customers, when we probably won't see a lightweight version with the FE moniker anymore?

Apple picker's view

Competition is important and it is not good if it is not maintained, because then the one at the top can easily rest on his laurels. I'd definitely prefer Samsung canceling one of their models if Apple added one. I understand his desire to stick with the 6,1" model given its compact dimensions, but the jump in size to the 6,7" iPhone Pro Max or Plus is unnecessarily large. Here I have to admit that Samsung has it graded better. After all, the 6,1" model of the Galaxy S series is the only representative of this display size in the manufacturer's numerous smartphones.

It probably wouldn't be entirely appropriate if we still had a 6,6" iPhone here, but 6,4 inches is the ideal size both for more demanding users and for those for whom 6,1 inches is too little and 6,7 inches is too much. Samsung solved this, for example, with the just-mentioned Galaxy S21 FE model with a 6,4" display. I can't help but think that for the giant Apple is, its iPhone lineup is still too limited for an evolving market that keeps asking for more variety. We'll see if we actually get an iPhone Ultra this year, and if it somehow breaks up the boring iPhone portfolio.
