iPhones are globally regarded as some of the best phones ever. There is nothing to be surprised about - these are flagships that offer the most modern technologies. After all, this is reflected in the price of practically all flags. Even so, the apple representative still lacks a small detail that is a matter of course for fans of competing devices. We mean the so-called always-on display. With its help, it is possible to draw, for example, the time even on a locked device with the screen off.

Always-on display

But first, let's very quickly and simply explain what always on is actually based on. This function is mainly available on phones with the Android operating system, which at the same time boast a screen with an OLED panel, which works completely differently compared to the previous LCD technology. LCD displays rely on LED backlighting. Depending on the displayed content, the backlight must then be covered with another layer, which is why it is not possible to depict real black - in fact, it looks grayish, since the mentioned LED backlight cannot be covered 100%. In contrast, OLED panels work completely differently – each pixel (representing a pixel) emits light by itself and can be controlled independently of the others. So if we need black, we simply don't even turn on the given point. The display thus partially remains off.

The always-on function is also built on this exact principle. Even if the display is turned off, the device can transmit information about the current time and possible notifications, as it uses only a small part of the pixels to display very basic information. After all, this is precisely why the battery is not wasted - the display is still practically switched off.

iPhone and always-on

Now, of course, the question arises, why doesn't the iPhone actually have something similar? In addition, it has met all the conditions since 2017, when the iPhone X was introduced, which was the first to come with an OLED panel instead of an LCD (in the current offer, we can only find it in the iPhone SE 3 and iPhone 11). Even so, we still don't have always-on and we can only enjoy it on our watches, and unfortunately not on all of them. Apple only implemented the function with the Apple Watch Series 5. Purely theoretically, it can be said that today's iPhones are capable of offering something similar. However, the Californian giant decided otherwise, which is why we are simply out of luck, at least for now.

Various speculations are also spreading among apple fans that Apple is saving the introduction of the always-on display for the worst times, when it will not have enough interesting news for the new generation. Probably, slightly different problems will be behind the whole situation. There are rumors that Apple is unable to implement the function without drastically reducing battery life, which we can see in a number of phones with the Android operating system. It is not always possible to balance everything, and it is in such moments that always-on can significantly reduce the endurance itself.

So it is possible that the giant from Cupertino is facing exactly this kind of problems and does not yet know how to find a solution. After all, that is why it is not even possible to say when we will actually see this news, or if it will be limited to newer iPhones, or if all models with an OLED display will see it through a software update. On the other hand, there is also the question of whether an always-on display is necessary at all. Personally, I use the Apple Watch Series 5, where the function is present, and yet I have it deactivated for a rather fundamental reason - to extend the battery life, which in my eyes is quite affected by it. Do you use always-on on your watch, or would you like this option on iPhones as well?
