In Japan, they are preparing a special application for the iPhone, which should enable residents to use some e-government functions through NFC communication with the local version of the identity card. In this regard, the iPhone would serve as an identifier that would unlock various functions of the state administration.

The information that the Japanese authorities are developing a similar application was confirmed by a representative of the Government Information Office. According to him, the application will function as an NFC scanner that can read the data stored on the RFID chip contained in a special document that resembles our identity cards. After reading and identifying the owner, the citizen will be given access to several functions that he will be able to do through his iPhone.

The application will create a unique identification number for each user, which will be used for authorization in many actions related to Japanese e-government. In this way, citizens will be able to, for example, file tax returns, ask questions of authorities, or deal with other official communication across various sectors of the state. In the end, there should be a significant reduction in paperwork and all kinds of administrative tasks.

The application should be available in the fall, probably together with the release of the new version of iOS with the number 13. In it, Apple will expand the functionality of the NFC reader in iPhones, and developers will finally be able to use this function more.

Moreover, Japan is not the only country that uses iPhones for the needs of citizens' services. Something similar has been operating for some time in the UK, for example, although not at this level. It is only a matter of time before similar systems spread to other countries. Especially to those who are serious about the digitization of state administration. Unfortunately, this does not apply to us...
