Before the presentation, the new iPhones were most often talked about in connection with the missing 3,5 mm headphone jack. After the introduction of the latest Apple phones, attention turns more to (admittedly, a little late) water resistance, as well as new and impressive black variants.

Design

However, everyone will notice the design even earlier. Jony Ive talked about it again in the video, who described the physical form of the new iPhone as a natural development. There are rounded edges merging with the curve of the display, a slightly protruding camera lens, now better embedded in the body of the device. The separation of the antennas has almost disappeared, so the iPhone looks much more monolithic. Especially in the new glossy black and matte black (which replaced space gray) versions.

However, for the gloss black version, Apple is careful to say that it is polished to a high gloss using sophisticated finishes and is prone to scratches. Therefore, it is recommended to carry this model in a package.

As already mentioned, the new design also includes resistance to water and dust according to the IP 67 standard. This means the highest possible resistance to the ingress of dust inside the device and the ability to withstand submersion one meter under water for a maximum of thirty minutes without damage. In practice, this means that the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus should not be affected by rain or washing with water, but direct immersion under the surface is not recommended.

Finally, in relation to the design of the new iPhones, the home button should be mentioned. This is no longer a mechanical button, but a sensor with haptic feedback. It works just like the trackpads on the latest Macbooks and MacBook Pro. This means it won't move vertically when "pressed", but the vibration motor inside the device will make it feel like it has. For the first time, it will be possible to set its behavior, which should be more reliable.

Cameras

A new camera is a matter of course. The latter has the same resolution (12 megapixels), but a faster image sensor, a larger aperture (ƒ/1,8 compared to ƒ/2,2 in the 6S) and better optics, composed of six parts. The sharpness and speed of focusing, the level of detail and the color of the photos should benefit from this. The smaller iPhone 7 also has new optical stabilization, which, among other things, allows for longer exposure and therefore better photos in low light. In such cases, the new flash consisting of four diodes will also help. In addition, the iPhone 7 analyzes external light sources when using them, and if they flicker, the flash adapts to the given frequency in order to reduce the flickering as much as possible.

The front camera was also improved, increasing the resolution from five to seven megapixels and taking over some functions from the rear camera.

Even more significant changes took place in the camera of the iPhone 7 Plus. The latter got a second camera with a telephoto lens in addition to one wide-angle one, which enables a two-fold optical zoom and up to a ten-fold, higher-quality, digital zoom. The two lenses of the iPhone 7 Plus also allow you to work much better with focusing - thanks to them, it is able to achieve a very shallow depth of field. The foreground stays sharp, the background blurs. In addition, the shallow depth of field will be visible directly in the viewfinder, before the photo is taken.

Display

The resolution remains the same for both iPhone sizes, and nothing changes with the 3D Touch technology either. But the displays will display even more colors than before and with up to 30 percent more brightness.

Sound

The iPhone 7 has stereo speakers—one traditionally on the bottom, one on the top—that are louder and capable of greater dynamic range. More important information, however, is that the iPhone 7 will indeed lose the standard 3,5mm audio jack. According to Phil Schiller, the main reason is courage… and the lack of space for new technologies inside the iPhone. Consoling news for owners of expensive (in Schiller's words "old, analog") headphones is the reduction supplied in the package (in particular, you can buy for 279 crowns).

The new AirPods wireless headphones were also introduced. They look almost the same as the classic EarPods (newly with a Lightning connector), only they lack a cable. But there is, for example, an accelerometer inside, thanks to which the headphones can be controlled by tapping them. Connecting them to your iPhone should be as easy as possible – just open their case near your iOS (or watchOS) device and it will automatically offer a single button Connect.

They can play music for 5 hours and their box has a built-in battery capable of providing 24 hours of playback. They will cost 4 crowns and you can buy them in October at the earliest.

Performance

Both the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus have a new processor, the A10 Fusion – said to be the most powerful ever put into a smartphone. It has a 64-bit architecture and four cores. Two cores have high performance and the other two are designed for less demanding tasks, so they require much less energy. Not only thanks to this, the new iPhones should have the best endurance of all so far, two hours more on average than last year's models. Compared to the iPhone 6, the graphics chip is up to three times faster and half as economical.

As for connectivity, support for LTE Advanced has been added with a maximum transmission speed of up to 450 Mb/s.

Availability

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will cost the same as last year's models. The only difference is that instead of 16, 64 and 128 GB, the available capacities are doubled. The minimum is now finally 32 GB, the middle is 128 GB, and the most demanding can reach up to 256 GB capacity. They will be available in classic silver, gold and rose gold, and newly in matte and gloss black. The first customers will be able to buy them on September 16. Czechs and Slovaks will have to wait a week longer, on Friday, September 23. More detailed information about availability in the Czech Republic and prices are available here.

While the new iPhones are (obviously) the best yet, making a compelling case for moving on from last year's models may be more difficult this year than before. As Jony Ive said at the very beginning of their presentation, this is a natural development, an improvement of what already exists.

So far, the iPhone 7 doesn't seem to have the potential to change the way a user handles an iPhone. This will be most evident in the software - this time Apple did not retain any special function that would be accessible only on the latest devices (except for photographic functions linked to the hardware) and the presence iOS 10 so she was mentioned rather in passing. The new iPhones will probably disappoint only those who expected unrealistic (and perhaps pointless) development leaps. Only the following weeks will show how they will reach the rest of the users.
