Apple iPads are the best-selling tablets in the world. After all, there is nothing to be surprised about, because they practically created this segment and the competition is not exactly ahead of itself in introducing new models. Even so, 2023 will probably be somewhat dry for new iPads.

Tablets do not drag much. Apple tries to present its iPads as an affordable replacement for a computer, although the question is what its idea of "affordability" is. The truth is that while their sales rose during the coronavirus crisis because people saw a certain sense in them, now they are falling sharply again. It is, after all, something that one can do without in the current situation, rather than to justify their purchase of such a device.

The competition in the field of Android tablets is also not in a hurry. At the beginning of February, OnePlus introduced its tablet with the Android operating system, but that's about it. Google showed it to us last year, but it hasn't been officially released yet. Samsung introduced its top-of-the-line Galaxy Tab S8 last February, but we're unlikely to see the S9 series this year. However, it was the same in the case of the predecessor. For Samsung, every other year does not mean a new series of top tablets. But it is not excluded that they will present something more affordable, for example the Galaxy Tab S8 FE.

 Clear cards dealt

If we look at Apple's offer, it is quite rich. There is the Pro series, which is represented by the 6th generation 12,9" variant with the M2 chip and the 4th generation 11" variant also with the M2 chip. The 5th generation iPad Air still offers the M1 chip, but if Apple were to equip it with a newer generation chip, there would be clear concerns about the cannibalization of the higher line, i.e. iPad Pros. In addition, he is not expected to be able to do much more, so it is quite unlikely that we will see him this year. It's also because there won't be new iPad Pros either.

Apple introduced them last fall, albeit only in the form of a press release. With them, the next generation is expected to use OLED displays, which the company probably won't have time to tune to perfection this year. After all, even the iPad Pro with the M1 chip came in the spring of 2021, so we can easily wait for the next generation in the spring of 2024 and there will be nothing bad or strange about it.

It was in autumn 2022 that Apple introduced the 10th generation iPad, i.e. the one that lost the desktop button and moved the fingerprint to the power button. However, Apple is still selling the 9th generation, which still offers the Home Button, and will be happy to keep it for the rest of this year. The price difference here is not negligible. Although the iPad 10 still has "only" the A14 Bionic chip, it is sufficient for the work for which the tablet is intended.

The only potential model to upgrade seems to be the iPad mini. It is currently in its 6th generation and is equipped with an A15 Bionic chip. It is more powerful than the iPad 10, but if it should be equal to the iPad Air, it clearly lags behind. But here comes the question, what would Apple give him for a chip? Other news would not even be expected, but in order to get M1, the chip is quite old for that, if it got M2, it would overtake Air. Apple will probably let it survive for a while longer in its current configuration, before the iPad Pros with M3 and Air chips arrive, and the mini gets M2 terminals.

Whether the basic iPad, i.e. the iPad 11, will have an M1 chip is a question. A more logical step seems to be to equip it with the current chip from the iPhone. Given the declining market trend, expanding the portfolio with a completely new model is not on the agenda. This year will not be rich in iPads, if we will see any new model at all. The game is more like just some smart display.
