In primary school in Nová Bělé, we already use iPads in the first grade. IN the first part of the series we presented the whole project and now it's time for the real use of apple tablets by the first graders and me, their class teacher. We want to show educators and parents the possibility of using the iPad in education step by step, and therefore we will look at how to involve the iPad in teaching from the 1st grade. I will show which applications are suitable (verified by me) for getting to know the iPad up to the possibility of creating your own teaching materials.

In September, we started with basic subjects, i.e. Czech language and mathematics. In addition to iPads and special applications for selected subjects, however, several other things must be arranged. Each lecturer may have different procedures and processes set up, however, before I start working with the children at school, I must have the following ready:

  • dropbox (or other storage) - for transferring data (images, files) between iPads.
  • E-mail – arrange for the children and set up e-mail on their iPad (the easiest way – and for another excellent connection with the iPad – Google Apps).
  • Projector a Apple TV - for a clearer demonstration, I recommend having a projector in the classroom in connection with Apple TV, which wirelessly projects the contents of the iPad directly to the projector.
  • Fast internet connection.

September

First-graders learn about iPads. Learns basic controls. How the iPad turns off, turns on, where you can turn it up and down, learn to turn off the motion sensor, move through the main menu, learn to take a screenshot. Very important for future work with the iPad.

They learned to control the iPad in the app Hello Color Pencil, which is free. This is a really simple drawing where kids learn to paint on the iPad, they learn the BACK function. Functions such as NEW, SAVE and OPEN are distinguished by color. Therefore, even children who cannot read (neither Czech nor English) can be guided to the given function using crayons. In this application, you can insert a background image and draw on it (fill in worksheets, connect ready-made pictures, cover ready-made letters, etc.)

Czech language

Each of us remembers folders with letters and syllables (most often spilled and scattered around the classroom). To prevent these children's delights, we started composing syllables in the application TS Land of magnets (€1,79). The principle of this application is simple and certainly understandable from the picture. Children compose letters. The advantage of this application is the possibility to assign images and shapes as well. The disadvantage is the absence of Czech diacritics. However, sufficient for learning basic syllables.

You can also use this application to practice math, because it can work with numbers and signs.

Mathematics

In math, we liked the app at first Math is fun: Ages 3–4, which you will use when deriving and counting numbers up to ten. In a very pleasant graphic environment, children count animals, shapes, dots on a cube. There are more such applications, but I don't know why this one has grown in our hearts. They match a given number to a given count. An advantage is the sound notification of an incorrectly filled-in number.
