In April of this year, even professional iPad users finally got their hands on it. The Californian company rushed out with a tablet in which the extremely powerful M1 chip beats. All loyal Apple fans are well aware of the ruckus this chip made when Apple implemented it in Macs, so many of us hoped tablet owners would share the same enthusiasm. However, at least according to first impressions, this is not quite the case. We'll try to explain why and show when the new iPad is worth it, and when it doesn't matter.

The performance jump is not as drastic as it might seem at first glance

It's no secret that Apple used chips from its own workshop in its tablets and phones from the beginning, but this was not the case with Macs. The Cupertino company was switching from processors from the Intel brand, which are built on a quite different architecture, which is why the jump in performance, machine noise and endurance was so drastic. However, iPads have never suffered from problems with durability and performance, the deployment of the M1 in the Pro series is more of a marketing move, which will simply not bring much to the vast majority of ordinary users.

Application optimization is dismal

Are you a professional, have the latest iPad Pro and are not complaining about the performance yet? Then I recommend that you wait another month before buying. Unfortunately, not even many professional applications can use the performance of the M1, so for now we can leave our appetite for more layers in Procreate or faster work in Photoshop. Of course, I don't want to put the latest machine down in any way. Apple is not entirely to blame for the shortcomings in the applications, and I believe that in a month I will speak differently. But if you are not extremely demanding and you still have a fully functional older generation, do not rush to buy the latest model.

iPadOS, or a system that is simply not built on the M1

I hate to say it, but the M1 surpassed the usability of iPadOS. Tablets from Apple have always been perfect for minimalists who like to focus on one specific activity and, as soon as they finish it, smoothly move on to another. In the current situation, when we have such a powerful processor, the tablet operating system cannot use it. Yes, WWDC is coming up in June, when we will hopefully see revolutionary innovations that can move iPads forward. But now I dare to say that apart from higher RAM memory and a better display, 99% of users won't know the difference between using an iPad Pro and models intended for the middle class.

Battery life is still where we were before

Personally, I practically don't turn on my computer for quite some time now, and I can get everything done all day from my iPad alone. This machine can easily last from morning to night, that is, if I don't overload it with multimedia processing programs. So I can't complain about the battery life, even though I'm using an iPad Pro from 2017. But in the 4 years since countless tablets were introduced, that battery life still hasn't moved anywhere. So, if you are a student, own an older iPad with a dead battery, and hope that with the arrival of "Pročka" we have moved somewhere with battery life, you will be disappointed. You will do better if you buy, for example, a basic iPad or iPad Air. You will see that this product will also make you happy.

The components are top-notch, but you won't use them in practice

After reading the previous lines, you may object to me that the M1 is not the only novelty that makes the iPad Pro stand out. I can't help but agree, but who, except the most discerning, appreciates the gadgets? The display is beautiful, but if you don't work with 4K video, the perfect screens in older generations will be more than enough. The front camera is improved, but for me it's not a reason to buy a more expensive model. 5G connectivity is pleasing, but Czech operators are not among the drivers of progress, and wherever you connect to 5G, the speed is still the same as LTE - and it will be like that for a few more years. The improved Thunderbolt 3 port is nice, but it won't help those who don't work with multimedia files much anyway. If you are a professional and you know that you will use these innovations, the iPad Pro is exactly the machine for you, but if you watch Netflix and YouTube on the iPad, handle e-mails, do office work and occasionally edit a photo or video, it is better to be modest and for buy some accessories with the money you save.
