As Apple notebooks have become lighter and thinner, at the same time their components have become more integrated and therefore more difficult to replace or repair. We face the same trade-offs as before. Naturally, we want lighter laptops that take up less space. We also want better displays that are made by gluing glass directly onto the LCD panel. But then we have to be content with the fact that such laptops will not be easily repaired or improved when they become obsolete. Server iFixit disassembled the latest 12-inch MacBook, and it probably won't surprise anyone that it's not exactly a do-it-yourself puzzle either.

Even when you remove the bottom cover of the new MacBook using a special pentagonal screwdriver, you will find that some components are located directly in it, which are attached to the rest of the laptop by means of cables. This is different from the MacBook Air and Pro, because there the bottom cover is just a separate aluminum plate.

Although the MacBook Air battery is not officially replaceable, in practice it is relatively simple to remove the bottom of the computer and replace the battery with the right tools. But with the new MacBook, the process is much more complicated, because if you want to disconnect the battery, you have to remove the motherboard first. In addition, the battery is firmly glued to the body of the MacBook.

At first glance, the MacBook's internals are more similar to what we could see inside an iPad. Due to the fact that the MacBook does not need a fan, the motherboard is small and very inflated. On top, you can see the Core M processor, which is supplemented with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips, one of the two flash SSD storage chips and small RAM chips. Underneath the motherboard is the main system 8GB of RAM, the other half of flash SSD storage, and a few different controllers and sensors.

Server & Hosting iFixit rated the repairability of the latest MacBook at one star out of ten, the same score that the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display "boasts". The MacBook Air is three stars better, thanks to the already mentioned absence of glue and an easy-to-replace battery. In terms of the possibility of repair, the XNUMX-inch MacBook is really bad, and you will have to rely purely on Apple and its certified services for repairs. Any improvements to the already purchased machine will then be impossible, so you will simply have to be satisfied with the configuration you buy in the Apple Store.
