One of the big limitations of Apple's smart speaker was that it only supported Apple Music. In order to play music from other streaming services, you either had to do it via AirPlay or you were just out of luck. However, according to at least one slide from the presentation, this is about to change, as support for other streaming services, such as Spotify, will come. Of course, on the condition that the developers update their applications and release a version for HomePod. But this is definitely a nice benefit that will surely please the owners of this smart speaker and maybe attract new users as well. After all, the HomePod has a really great sound that puts a lot of its competitors in its pocket. At the moment, it is not yet clear whether support will also be added for podcast applications, but it is not excluded. Later this year, the arrival of the HomePod mini speaker is expected, which will mainly target less demanding users.
I think that supporting third-party streaming services can attract new customers, but also help Apple in the lawsuits that Spotify has filed against it for favoring Apple Music over the Swedish company, as well as other streaming services. We will see how the situation will develop further.
