The popular iOS file manager GoodReader came with a controversial update during the Christmas holidays. This application, which, in addition to very advanced work with PDF, also allows you to view documents in practically any format, has brought a big novelty in the new version. This is a function called Speak, whose domain is the ability to transform any PDF or TXT document into an audiobook.

However, the update also removed some features associated with iCloud. The developers were afraid of downloading GoodReader from the App Store. In order not to suffer a similar fate to the Transmit application (see below), they have removed the ability to create new folders in iCloud, delete them or move files between folders stored in iCloud as a precaution.

The developers apologized for the difficulties caused by the removal of some functions and referred to the need to comply with the rules of iCloud. The problem, however, lies in the fact that no one really knows what the rules for iCloud Drive and its integration in applications actually apply. Apple has already changed its decision on the impossibility of using this functionality several times, so the developers of GoodReader can hope that they will be able to return the full connection with iCloud back.

The case surrounding the Transmit application proves that even Apple itself has a mess in its own rules. It had to be deprived of the "Send to iCloud Drive" function due to pressure from Apple, but after media coverage of the whole matter in Cupertino, they reversed their decision and Transmit could return in its original form. Another example is the lack of clarity around widgets, which the popular calculator PCalc almost paid for it. Even here in this case, however Apple eventually reversed its position. After all, he analyzes the whole problem in context our article.

It's possible that even GoodReader will eventually get its original features and full access to iCloud Drive. However, developers are probably waiting for the rules to be clarified and do not want to unnecessarily expose their application to the risk of not passing through Apple's approval team. So we'll see how the whole situation develops and how Apple reacts to the situation. But the current state is a mess in which everyone loses. Apple, the developers, and most importantly the users themselves, which should matter most to the responsible employees of Apple.
