Similar applications have mushroomed in the App Store since the arrival of the iPhone. You may still remember when you used a lit display with a white background as a flashlight, which was sometimes sufficient as an emergency solution. But the new iPhone finally got that long-awaited diode, taking the phone's usefulness as a flashlight much further.

The applications themselves are very simple and the only thing they basically do is turn on the diode. Some may point out that the diode can also be turned on from the Camera application, but that is a bit impractical and "un-Apple" for my taste. My idea of a flashlight is to light up a diode with one click and that's exactly what these apps give me.

As I said, the Appstore has loads of them, some free, some paid. The only thing that differs is the graphic processing and a few functions. So how to choose the best one?

An application called Flashlight+ caught my eye. How is it different from others? I guess I'll start from the icon. It is very beautifully made and will look great on your retina display even in a mess of icons. Despite its simplicity, the graphical environment of the application is also nicely processed. Right after booting you will be shown a screen with one big button and two diodes indicating whether the diode is on or not. It will be turned on right after the application starts, which is quite logical.

If he swipes from right to left, you will be taken to another screen with a slider. This is a stroboscope, where you determine the intensity of the flashing by moving the slider. To my surprise, the diode can flash very quickly and in a dark environment you can really create the impression of jerky movement. But I don't recommend using the strobe for too long, firstly your battery (not the flashlight) will die quickly, and secondly the diodes also have a limited lifespan.

The last screen is SOS, so the phone will send this signal in morse code using a diode. If you don't use any of the previous features, you can swipe up from the main screen to bring up the settings screen and turn on the "Flashlight Only" feature.

The app costs €0,79, which may seem like an unnecessary waste to some, but for this price you will have a beautiful-looking, functional app, plus a nice icon that will definitely not embarrass you on the springboard. If you know of another such app that you like, feel free to share it with others in the comments.
