American airline Delta Airlines, which is one of the largest in the world, will partially switch to Apple products next year. The transition concerns all business phones and tablets used by pilots, flight attendants and other employees involved in flight operations. Apple will thus replace Microsoft, which until now has been the exclusive supplier of IT technology for this airline.

Delta Airlines employees currently use Nokia (Microsoft) Lumia phones and Microsoft Surface tablets. They have special software installed in them, which makes it possible to use these devices in their specific work environment. Phones, for example, for customer services on board and tablets as direct assistants for the crew and specific purposes on board (more information about the so-called Electronic Flight Bag can be found here). However, this will change from the beginning of next year.

The Lumia will be replaced by the iPhone 7 Plus and the Surface tablet will be replaced by the iPad Pro. This transition will affect more than 23 crew members and 14 pilots. With this transition, Delta Airlines will join other major global airlines that already use Apple products for these purposes. These are, for example, the companies Aeromexico, Air France, KLM and Virgin Atlantic. Thanks to the unification of the platforms, cooperation and communication between individual airlines will be significantly easier, and according to representatives of Delta Airlines, this will help faster development in the field of aviation IT technologies.

Delta Airlines isn't leaving Microsoft entirely. The companies will continue to cooperate. However, the technology for pilots and crew members, together with all accompanying applications, manuals, etc., will work on Apple hardware in the coming years. This may be even happier news for Apple because a similar transition could also occur for other airlines that are part of the SkyTeam alliance and do not yet use iOS devices.
