According to a new analyst report, Apple is preparing to implement its own 5G modems in the iPhone as early as 2023. Although the company creates its own chipsets for iPhones, typically the A-series ones, it still relies on Qualcomm for wireless connectivity. However, it may be the last time with the iPhone 14, because big changes could happen before long.

Qualcomm's financial director mentioned at a meeting with investors that from 2023 he expects only 20% of the supply of his 5G modems to Apple. Moreover, it is not the first time that similar rumors about Apple's own 5G modem have appeared. The company was originally reported to have started development of its own modem as early as 2020, originally hoping to have them ready for the 2022 iPhone release, i.e. the iPhone 14. The company was apparently targeting that 2022 date pretty hard, but with this latest news, it seems , that the deadline was moved by a year.

A custom 5G modem could bring a number of benefits

Sure, an iPhone with an Apple-made modem will still give users 5G connectivity just like Qualcomm's modem in the iPhone 12 and 13, so why even mention it? But while Qualcomm's modems must be designed for use in countless devices from a wide variety of manufacturers, Apple will have the advantage of creating a modem that can seamlessly integrate with the iPhone for the best possible user experience. The benefits are therefore obvious and are:

  • Better battery life
  • More reliable 5G connection
  • Even higher data transfer speed
  • Saving the internal space of the device
  • The possibility of problem-free implementation in other devices as well

Such a move also makes sense given that Apple wants to be in charge of every possible aspect of its iPhones. It designs the chipset that powers it, builds the iOS operating system for it, manages the App Store for downloading new content, etc. The less Apple has to rely on third parties for various components, the more it can design every little aspect of the iPhone to to be exactly according to his ideas.

However, a custom 5G modem might not be exclusively for iPhones. It goes without saying that it is also used in iPads, but many users have been calling for 5G in their MacBooks for quite some time now.
