A higher refresh rate will undoubtedly be among the biggest innovations of the upcoming iPhones. Apple is expected to deploy "faster" panels with a 120Hz refresh rate similar to the iPad Pro. In today's article, we will answer what the refresh rate means and whether it is even possible to tell the difference compared to a device with a "classic" 60Hz frequency.

What is refresh rate?

The refresh rate indicates how many frames per second the display can display. It is measured in hertz (Hz). Currently, we can meet three different data on phones and tablets – 60Hz, 90Hz and 120Hz. The most widespread is definitely the 60Hz refresh rate. It is used in the displays of most Android phones, iPhones and classic iPads.

Apple iPad Pro or newer Samsung Galaxy S20 they use a 120Hz refresh rate. The display can change the image 120 times per second (render 120 frames per second). The result is much smoother animations. At Apple, you may know this technology under the name ProMotion. And although nothing has been confirmed yet, it is expected that at least the iPhone 12 Pro will also have a 120Hz display.

There are also gaming monitors that have a 240Hz refresh rate. Such high values are currently unattainable for mobile devices. And that's mainly because of the high demand on the battery. Android manufacturers solve this by significantly increasing battery capacity and automatic frequency switching.

At the end, we will also state whether it is possible to tell the difference between a 120Hz and a 60Hz display. Yes it can and the difference is quite extreme. Apple describes it very well on the product page of the iPad Pro, where it says "You'll understand it when you see it and hold it in your hand". It is hard to imagine that an iPhone (or another flagship model) could be even smoother. And that's totally fine. But once you get a taste of the 120Hz display, you'll find that it goes more smoothly and it's hard to go back to the "slower" 60Hz display. It's similar to switching from HDD to SSD years ago.
